35-375 BR ????

Hi,

trying to find the right cartridge for the new Indiana deer regs that say you can use a case up to 1.625 long and bullets .357 and larger.

Thought about a 35 up to 375 Br as an option . Is there a wildcat cartridge like this already ? If so what would its potential be. Any articles available on the subject?

Thanks

.375 IHMSA. It's not a wildcat so brass and dies are available.

357 HERRETT shortened to legal length.

35 HERRETT necked up to 358.

357/44 Mag.

7.62 x 41mm necked up to 358.,Same thing as a 35 BR)

Or, if you're not set on a particular caliber, any of the big handgun cartridges.

All will kill a deer dead.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to use a br case and come up with a solution. I know about the 30 br . Doesnt seem like it would be hard to make a 35 br? Not sure what the performance numbers would be with a 150 gr bullet in a rifle ?

Maybe some 30 BR shooters will chime in here and tell you what kind of mv they are getting from their rifles. But most of them use lighter bullets so you'd have to do some guessing of what you'd get from the 150s.

The Sierra manual shows velocities for the 30 BR and 150 grain bullets out of a 26" barrel at better than 2600 fps.

The old 308 x 1.5 wildcat, which preceeded the 30 BR by about 45 years, would get about 2500 fps with a 150 grain bullet in a 24" barrel.

I would surmise that a 35 caliber version of either cartridge would do about the same. [The 357 HERRETT,a slightly longer case @ 1.75") gets almost 2400 fps from a 14" Contender barrel which would tend to support my assumption.]

Even the 357 Magnum in a 18" barrel rifle will get 1800 fps with a 158 grain bullet.

These are just SWAGs on my part so don't hold me to anything I may say.

Good Luck

Bak here in the hills we just use the 30 BR with 110 v-max ....it has as much energy as a .243 at 200yds....most folks agree that is plenty,,,,I know a few deer that will dissagree!!!...Why complicate things...to shoot the 150's you gotta go away from the 17 twist,,,and the 17 twist is what rellly brings this cal to life,,,25 yrs ago I shot a 30X44 with a 15 twist and 150 SBT's...it worked good...unfortuantely it is a cal that is tooo long for Indiana!!! Sounds like the 375 Whisper would be right up your alley. Check out the web site www.sskindustries.com. This is J.D.Jones company who developed the 338 Whisper and 375 Whisper which are the 7mm BR Remington brass necked up to their respective diameter. The 375 Whisper was designed as a sub-sonic cartridge to shoot a 300 gr bullet at 1050 fps but is also capable of shooting lighter bullets at much greater velocity while still being very accurate.. His company can supply dies and brass for these cartridges.

What exactly is their intent in specifying such an odd set of parameters for hunting? It seems like they are trying to redefine existing cartridges or sell specific ones. Just curious as I don't understand their logic. I'm assuming this is for pistol cartridges only or am I mistaken.
