338 WIN MAG TWIST RATE

I just picked up Ruger 338 win that has been re-barreled with a 1-8 twist rate. I plan to shoot 250 grain Nosler's. Anyone here have any experience with twist rate?

That’s tighter than normal. You could probably shoot 300 gr Sierras, et al through that. 250’s should do just fine.

That’s really fast for a 338, I use 1-8 and 1-7.5 twist for big solids, especially the 285’s

My 1-7.5 blows up Berger 300’s reliably.

1-9 is a better option for cup core bullets in a 338.

I’d be careful with bullet selection and speeds with a 1-8.

Should be ok i dont think a win mag will drive them fast enough to worry. How long is the barrel?

At 2700fps (250gn) your roughly at 243k rpm, that should be ok.
If you’re shooting 180’s you’re getting into bullets starting to Houdini on the way to the target range of rpm.

That’s an odd twist rate for a 338 Win Mag. I had a 1-8” twist 338 Edge at one point that shot heavy monos almost exclusively. FWIW, it shot 250gr Bergers with no isssues at around 2950 fps.

Torque will be 'impressive' with the heavies and that twist rate.
