338 Wildcat question???

What's the difference between the 340 Goodling and a 338 Baer? I believe both are based off of a blown out 340 Wby Mag with a 35 degree shoulder. Am I missing something?

Basically the name. It's like the 30 Goodling and 308 Baer. Probably a slight difference in taper or amount blown forward. Matt

I just recently acquired a 340 Goodling and need a set of dies or at least a resize die. But due to the cost of heat treating Sid Goodling waits until he gets an order of at least 10 before he will make any. So I was wondering how close they were and if I could use the 338 Baer dies for the 340 Goodling. I just got a 338 Uni Neck Reamer from PT&G to open up the neck so I can fire form 340 Wby Mags. Any ideas??? I'd really like to fire this rifle.

Give Whidden Gunworks a call, they can make you a full length bushing sizer die for $114, you need to have either a reamer print or send them 3 or 4 cases fired in your chamber.

Have a bit of .338 wildcat experience...

What purpose to go with a blown-out .340wby anyway? Fun and oddity; I get that, but...

Going to AI a factory weatherby chamber? Maybe that is Cheap Thrills. Going with a custom barrel, brand new and ponying up the Big Bucks???

I've owned and shot .338 rum, .340wby, .338win mag, and .338-06. In 2002/03 I found the .338/300win mag and have gone to it ever since. Using XMR4350 it works from 65gr to 78gr and about duplicates the wby and rum performance. Of course, neither of the big case .338s will tolerate light loads; so have a lot more versatility. I've only shot it with 250gr bullets and none of my rifles have used a brake.

Shooting longrange comps then at least you have a good source for relatively cheap Norma brass almost anywhere ammo is sold. That is the only benefit besides some addl velocity can see. Sure, velocity can be the determining factor, but if so the .338 Edge or even the shorter Rum has your ticket...

The .338/300 has even better brass availability and affordability. There are some AI versions out there.

I use a .338win Forster die chamber for seating and a .300win Redding type S FL die for sizing. The .300win takes any .338 bushing from .358 to .364 just fine. The die has neck clearance for loaded rounds without bushing, so all it lacks is .338/300 engraving.

If still sold on your wby AI wildcat, pretty easy to have a Forster .340wby die body reamed to AI. Should also be able to remove the heat treat from a sizer and ream it, but there's that undersize reamer thing to make a quality sizing die...

Best versatility in class, cheap brass, and easy to use dies that work are factors all in favor of the .338/300win mag!

The 338-300 win never made it to the 1000 yard firing line. In fact the 300Win disappeared because it is too hard to get to shoot. The 300 WSM and the Dasher pretty much dominate now. They used the 340 case so they could use Norma and Weatherby brass. Much better brass then REM or Win. This is 1000 yard BR and not hunting round. Matt
