.338 Whisper #1

With several thousand once, tvice or thrice fiered .308 win cases (Lapua and Norma), I´m wanting to get another cartridge that fits SSG .308win and I can make use of all of those cases, haveing a .338 whisper barrel made for me.

What do I need?

Do I shorten, open up a 308 win sizing die to 338 dimesions, plus a .338 expander?

Or can I buy a set of dies?

I have a 338 Whisper based on the 7 mm BR case. I like your thought process but you will have extremely thick necks if you form 308 brass to 338. I just cut a 308 case to 1.5 inches and lubed it up with Redding imperial size lube and ran it into my 338 Whisper sizer. It took a lot of pushing to size it down!!!! 308 neck wall thickness was .011 inches after I cut it. My 338 case neck is .009-.010.
308 case necked to 338 neck wall is .018 so you will have to turn the necks. Notice the shoulder on the necked down 308 isn’t as sharp as my case on the right. Mine looked they way until fired. You can purchase 338 dies from SSK Industries.

You can inside neck ream to remove the eccess material in the neck as alternative to neck turning

the best case to form any of the 308x1.5 case family is the 6.5 creedmoor case by hornady... its the lightest case and has the thinnest wall structure as well I make all of my 7mm BR cases from them and my 280 British cases and my 7.92x33 cases and my 375 whisper cases and a quick run on the neck lathe all is good..actually only my 7MM BR requires neck turning everything else is golden.

last time I looked the .338 whisper was either .221 fireball necked up to .338 or the 7mm BR case necked up to .338.. I am currently building the .375 whisper and its based on the 7mm BR case and I got that straight from JD Jones himself But I believe the correct case is the 7mm BR case....
