338 sobots for 50 BMG

has anyone tried to smooth bore a sabot round for the big 50? the idea that was passed to me was to custom form a finned perpetrator and sabot it through a 50 bore. the fins would have to be angled to produce spin and stabilize during flight. the military used to have howitzers with smooth bores to get velocities of up to 4700fps. the idea would be interesting to micro size on the 50 case. the projectile would have to be shaped like the RPG round to keep center mass ahead of drag. any thoughts or has it been done?

It works marvelously in the 105*608 Howitzer.

Sounds like your finned projectiles are going to be mighty expensive to manufacture both in time and materials. You won't need a very big fin to make it spin, but it's going to require some careful design or you'll lose those fins very soon after the muzzle.

I tried lexan fins on a model rocket once, didn't work out too well and the divergent behavior, flutter) ripped the rocket to pieces.

build those too, not that 250 foot pounds of thrust ain't cool but the projectile would be turned, solid brass with .03 degree right twist. again single piece projectile machined. obviously has potential with 105 but has it been tried for anything smaller? when you consider the ex pence of depleted uranium and tungsten cores the cost of micro machining is not the limiting factor here niether is the design and manufacture. the potential for said valocity gains is there.

again not a joke, we are on the way to produce the round. just asking if its been thought out by better minds than i.

The biggest issue .50 shooters have with sabot rounds is that we use brakes to counter the recoil and the sabot has the potential to open inside the brake. That was the issue with the SLAP round anyway.

You might want to go over to the FCSA,Fifty Caliber Shooters Association), and see what's going on there....

I know when Skip Talbot was alive he was very interested in all things 50. Not sure exactly what he worked on, but I know most of it was 'over my head'!
