338 savage 112 target

Picked up the target 112. Going to start with 300 smk. Have h1000 on hand. Understand the whole start low work up safety goal. Not exactly as cheap to chase multiple loads like my Valkyrie or grendel. Any starting advice? Loads? Ladder vs grouping to start? This isn’t going to be a gun I’m using every week. But I want to find a good load in a cost effective manner. Thanks

I have the same rifle. I'm still working up a load with Berger 300 OTM's and H1000. I'll get you the numbers as I'm not in the shop right now. It was a bit of a challenge to work the factory target trigger so I replaced it with a Timney. There may be some overlap in the SMK and the Berger's.

I'll be acquiring some h1000; all I can say so far is don't try ramshot magnum and Sierra 300s that combo isnt working for me.

R33 is another; but I do read that h1000 is a good choice. I can say, wow that muzzle break works great, and check your scope torques before you head out.

My rifle says lands are near 3.715", though I don't have seating depth recommendations yet.

I had good luck with 300 grain Berger hunters and R33 in mine. Mine shoots the Berger better than the Sierra an R33 better than H1000. My buddy’s is the opposite. There a hoot to play with. I even took a nice doe with the 300 grain Berger.
I also had good luck with N570 and the 300 grain Berger. Although I think R33 was more accurate but I didn’t put as much time in with the N570.

So far my load of 84.6 grains of H1000 groups right at 3/4" at 200 yards (3 shot group) with the 300 grain Berger OTM's. Velocity is a bit slow at 2490 (SD of 8) . I'm not sure on where to go from here except maybe play with seating depth? I started with the book value of 3.680 COAL. My starting load was 83.1 (min of 81.0 grains, max of 85.2 grains; average is 83.1) and shot 3 shot groups in .3 grain increments. Groups started at 1 1/2" with 83.1 and declined to 3/4" at 84.6 and then opened up to 2" at 85 grains.
