338 LM Loading Data

I am sure this has been addressed before, I am loading 250gr. bullets. Have H1000 and H4831 on hand. Have Re23 and Re26 also. Have not used these two yet.
I am shooting the Savage 110. Have access to other powders also.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Retumbo and H1000 were the go to powders for the Lapua case. Now R33 was designed for the 338 Lapua case. It gives more velocity with less pressure. Not sure about where the other Re powders you listed falls. The 4831 is too fast for that case. We got great accuracy and 100 to 150 more FPS with Re 33. Matt

Looking back on my notes back in 08,max loads for a 250 matchking or a 250 scenar using H 4831 was around 88 to 90gr.The barrel I was testing had a sweet spot at 90gr. giving 3" ten shot groups at 600 yds. with a velocity around 2975.But again this info is barrel specific.N 165 is listed as the accuracy load for VV and it is not an accident,I have a laminated group of 2 3/8 for five at 800yds when I set that barrel back rechambering to a 338 Norma. The powders mentioned above are viable also, the moral of the story is not to discount any of the powders and try them all, this is not the easiest case to tune.

I only shot 300 Bergers because it is a longrange hunting gun. The Re 33 shot 4 to 5 inch 5 shot groups at 1000 yards. I have an Improved Lapua version and ran 2993 but I have first generation Bergers and didn't want to push them over 3000. I ran 3070 with one load and no pressure but it was faster then I wanted. We also put it in a 338 Ultra and ran 3000 with good accuracy. One guy put it in a stock Savage and went 3000. I don't know how the accuracy was or how far he shot it, but he said it shot good. It has been a good powder for speed and accuracy in the guns we tried it in. Matt

How many grain of RE33 and what COAL you use with those 300 berger?

Seem like they were not list those new powder in their manual.

I believe it is listed on Aliant's reloading site. My gun is a custom with a long throat and I am shooting them in the lands. Matt

I know this is a late reply but I looked on several site trying to find load date for the 250 smk before I started loading. I just finished some testing using retumbo. My load range was from 90-95 gr. I was shooting a sako TRG-42 338 lm with 1-10 twist. I had several groups that were just above half inch at 100 yards. I read a lot about people not getting great results at that range because the bullets didn't have time to "sleep". I didn't experience this in my handloads more the 300 smk factory loads I shot at 100 yards, those also shot 1/2 inch. I hope this helps anyone looking for 250 smk load data using retumbo. Lapua brass, 215 primers and OAL was set at magazine length.

Thanks for the info. I did purchase some Re33, but have not worked up a load yet. I put this on the back burner for a while. May try retumbo also.

Berger has load data on their website for both 250 and 300gr bullets.
Speed loads were just over 2900fps. Ramshot Magnum,92.8gr. Retumbo, 94gr. Both are compressed loads.

I have the Savage single shot, and thus are not limited to the factory 3.68" loading length. My local guy throated mine to allow me to seat both bullets out to 3.94".
I am using about an ice cream scoop full of RL-33 with the 300gr Hybrid, and get a little over 3000fps with no pressure signs.

If you have not ordered a rail yet, get a tall one. I bought a Murphy 25 moa, and wish I had gotten a 40.
