338 Lapua

I want to build a 338 of some sort on my Savage Target action if possible, anyone done it yet? If so what about bolt head availabilty or anything else I might need? I will do the work myself so im gonna go nutless with a 30" stick, what break should I use? Im thinking I should throat for 300gr SMK, twist 10 maybe 9.5? any info would be great thanks.

how would you get a 3.68 OAL cartridge in the loading port, or out????? and the bolt face would be to small. I am having a 338 edge built on a long action and there isn't much left of the bolt face left ( .534) and the lapua's is bigger ( .588) . I would look at a 7RSAUM, IMO good luck, cliffe

I think my next build will be a .338 shooting 300gr bullets also. I have been leaning towards a .338 edge or improved .338 rum since they use a standard magnum bolt face. The .338/.378 weatherby is another good option but as with the other .338s there is limited brass availible. My local gunsmith uses cz 550 actions with the .416 rigby bolt face for a lot of his .338 lapua builds. Keep us posted on your build and your results.

The 338 Lapua and Improved gives alot of bolt thrust. I feel it is better served by a heavier action. They are a hoot to shoot at longrange, washes and impacts are easy to see at distance. Downrange energy is awesome and a deer killing machine with 300 grain Bergers. There something about a 300 grain Berger going 3000. I have a 10 twist on mine and a regular radial brake. Recoil is not a factor but my gun weighs 45 pounds with a 1.450 diameter 36 inch barrel on. Mine is an Improved version. Matt
