338 Lapua OCW Test

Going to get a hunting load developed with a 250 Accubond and Retumbo. I have a target load of 93.5 with a 300SMK @ under an inch @ 100 yards. Testing that @ 200 in the am. Starting the Accubonds @ 96 grains & going to 98 according to Hodgdon data center.
The gun is my buddies Remington MLR. Had it bedded & trigger worked on. Muzzle break works/not much recoil. Does make some dust tho! Thinking Im going to have to get one of these now. Redding comp dies are almost cheating.
Had plans on load developing @ 600 yards, but my access to that range has been postponed. Benchrest rifle club of St. Louis. Very nice range. Happy Holidays everybody! :)

I have extensive experience with a custom .338RUM using 250gr Barnes TSX. It is a killing machine beyond belief. The NAB will stretch the range somewhat. My African load is 2986fps using MRP, which is about what you will get.
What are you hunting?

First and foremost the owner of the gun is an ex-marine. All sniper shows have LM in them! He wants to shoot paper for now. When his son gets some years on him, I guess they will go out west & try an elk.
Or maybe a couse deer! :)
Im getting long in the tooth. I like the idea of commanding an area from a high point now, as opposed to humping the hills when I was younger.
The AB in my buds 338 win mag BAR shoots small groups @ 300 yards. Never peeled anything with that yet. I had a rugger in 338 win mag with 225 partitions for elk. Never got one tho. Made a mess of some yotes! Couldn't get the 77 to shoot that good.
Traded it for a 270 BAR. Shoots great, but is @ the smith's now for repair.

The .338 caliber is the best I have found for elk. We have taken many at my friend's ranch in Colorado. Used 250 Noslers for years but have switched to Barnes in the last 7-8yrs.

I shoot a McMillan TAC338. Shot a couple of elk and several deer with it. 90gr Retumbo w/300SMK. It really is amazing what this thing will do. We practice throughout the winter and summer then use it whenever I get a chance in the fall. And by the way, there is no such thing as overkill. A shoulder hit deer with any rifle will be wasted so we shoot for center of mass. Very efficient killing machine.

What is the biggest difference between the barnes & accubond??
Shot groups yesterday and had 3 accubonds go into the same hole @ 100 yards.
My SMK load that shot good several weeks ago seemed to only group over MOA @ 200yds.
While I was @ it, I OCW tested my BLR in 243, (1974 vintage) and the only load that stood out was 50gr of 760 w/nosler 55gr bal tip. 1" wide by 1/4" tall. Wind 5mph @ 100yds.
