No the 30 caliber is a much better performer with 230s than the 338 would be. I'm interested in trying it out on a deer hunt actually. Shots at around 200-500 yards. I have the bullets/powder so figure I'd give it a whirl. H1000 seems like to go too powder rather than RE33 as used in the heavier bullets. I have much better deer rifles but thought I'd give it a go next season.I've only ever run the 300's in my 338 Lapua imp. and they zip right along, I can only imagine how fast you'll be able to launch those 230's and I look forward to hearing about them.
Not exactly apples to apples, but I have a 30-338 Lap Imp that I shoot the Berger 230's in and with its 28in tube it'll send em at 3250 with 106gr US869. I use US869 in both.
I don't know what powders you have on hand, but I'd imagine N570, RL33, and Retumbo, in that order, would be your best performers.
Will doThe 230's out of a 338 LM with H 1000 sounds like it would be laser beam.
I shot a hog once with my Sako 338 LM TRG-S using a 200gr Nosler Ballistic Tip going 3400+ with a stiff load of H4831, tipped it over like a metal silhouette falling off it's stand, was very impressive.
I think the Hornady 230 ELD-X would be a great point blank bullet for a 338 LM at normal hunting ranges for those who would choose such a cartridge.
Very interested in hearing about your results if you succeed in harvesting a deer with that bullet.
