338 lapua action question

Can you use a long remington 700 action as a foundation for a 338 lapua? Will the bolt face open up enough? Can you get a PTG bolt?

Just a question, going to have to rebarrel this year.

I would personaaaly recommend against it. Reason being that given the 1.35" diameter of the receiver, a .338 chamber doesn't leave a lot of meat in the barrel/action for a high pressure cartridge. The bolt needs to be openned up a lot and generally a Sako or M-16 extractor conversion is done.

Yes, it's been done by others.

I've had a 700 Sendero-SF for years in .338 RUM. It was very accurate when the barrel was fresher, and ballistically does pretty much anything the Lapua will do. The case is based on the old Jeffries which is a little smaller in diameter and IMO a bit more reasonable in a 700 action
