If you are wanting to build a 338 that will launch 300 gr smks at or around 3000 fps without excessive pressure AND with bbl life upwards of 1500 or so rounds , if you are careful with the temps ) What would it be ?

I believe that I would look at one of 338 Lapua based improved's.
I get mid 3,150's w/300 SMK's without "sticky" bolt lift in a 338
Lapua Improved. Hornady has the 'prints for it under 338 Gibby.

I have been thinking of buillding a 338 edge. It is a 300 ultra necked up to 338. I have read that it will get the 300 SMK up to 3000 FPS. I like the idea of the ultra mags because you can use a regular Remington action. Lapua brass would be nice however.

Now Jim you should be carefull asking great questions like that i would say a 338WBX the reamer arrived in my mail box yesterday it is a 338-300 Remington Ultra Mag with a 12.5 thou body taper and 60 degree shoulder yes that is correct with a slight radius on the neck shoulder junction. I will have a 30" barrel in a laminated A5 stock 3.9" detachable magazine and large muzzle break here is a reamer print I went with the Ultra Mag case over the 338 Lapua for 2 reasons the first is i believe the Lapua case has to much reaward thrust for a Rem action and the strength is marginal when they are converted i also think the Sako conversian could be not as safe as running a Rem factory version. The next thing was cost of brass the Rem Brass is very good and if batched as good as any and a lot cheeper

Bill,
You are always a step ahead of me .The 338 Wild Bill Extreme?

I plan on using a custom action and I really want to use Lapuua brass as I am not wanting to do extensive case prep.

My computer can't open the file you attached to your post , perhaps you could email it to me in a form other than excel spreadsheet . Your project sounds interesting ,I hope you post results here as you get them .
