338 bullet choice for Elk

Speer Grand Slams are a very good, low cost, option.

During our Nilgai hunt last January, the GS bullets were the only ones to give exits. Other bullets used were Partitions, Accubonds, LRXs, and ELD-Xs. Chamberings were 300WM, 300RUM, 300 PRC, .33 Nosler, and 338WM. Shot distances were from 125 yards to 526 yards.

Well, not an elk, but Nosler 225 gr partitions did the job here. Sako AV Kokotukki, .338 Win Mag, 18.5” bbl. 240 yds. He dropped at the first shot through his shoulders. He gathered up his hind end and my follow up shot went through his ribs/ and ended up stuck in his neck hide, he dropped instantly to that shot as well.

The 338 Win Mag is what you get if you increase the 30-06's diameter by 10%. Kinda crazy how close the measurements come out. So if you take a 180 grain bullet and increase the diameter by 10% you end up with 217 grains. I think the 338 Win Mag is about perfect with 210 or 225 grain bullets. I like Accubonds even though I'm currently without a 338 WM. If I were hunting in grizzly country I'd probably sacrifice a little bit of range and go with a 250 grain Partition or A-Frame. Another bullet I haven't seen mentioned a lot is the Barnes TTSX in 210 or 225 grain. The Berger 250 is a sleek son of a gun but I'm not sure you could get enough velocity out of it to make it outshine the 225 Accubond. Maybe. They give pretty impressive numbers from the bigger 338s for sure.
