338-375Ruger

I think most people are calling this the 338-300 PRC. Or at least it's basically the same thing. Case capacity is right in between the 33 Nosler and 338 RUM, and maybe just a hair quicker than a 340 Weatherby. I think the 300's are a bit on the heavy side unless you have a 12+ lb gun and want to shoot beyond 1000 yards. I tried 285's and 300's in my 338-378 and found them to be harder to load for, harder on brass, and more punishing in the recoil department. My gun is a factory Accumark so I think it's a bit light for shooting the heavies. The 250s are a pleasure to work with and really don't give up anything to the heavier bullets inside of 800 yards. The 250 grain Berger has amazing ballistics. Or the Hornady 230 ELD. I'm toying with a new 338 build right now, leaning toward a regular old 338 Win Mag, but the Ruger case is on my list of possibilities. It seems like the best option for speed before stepping up to a Lapua-sized action and bolt face.

So far, I have gotten 2940 fps from the 250 smk using H4350. I have gotten 2750 with the 300smk and IMR 4831. Recoil on either one is really tolerable. Tried some slower powders, and all that provided was recoil.

Anyone have a 338-300 PRC reamer they might part with? I have an old Pacnor polygonal barrel I'd like to try in that caliber.

No, its not called a 338-300 PRC, its a 338-375 Ruger. Ive had one for over 15 years since shortly after the 375 Ruger case debuted on the market. While the PRCs also use the 375 Ruger as a parent, the case body dimensions are NOT the same. The 375 Ruger case has its shoulder set farther forward than 300 PRC brass.

Dave Tooley, myself, and a few others were wildcatting on the 375R case LONG before any of the PRCs existed. We necked that case with everything from 6.5mm on up the line. All great performers

I personally like loads i developed using RL16 and H4350 behind the Berger 250gr Elite Hunter. Getting up around 3000 fps in a 26” Brux barrel with 1 in 10” twist is not a problem. The 338-375R is an accurate, forgiving and very efficient 33 cal round design that will outperform 338 Lapua factory ammo speeds with significantly less powder charge weights. Great barrel life as well.

I now use 300 PRC brass from ADG to form my cases because 375R brass from Hornady has weak primer pockets, but as you can see in the photo, the fire-formed 338-375R case shoulder (right) is pushed significantly farther forward than the virgin ADG 300 PRC brass beside it (left)

That's cool and good looking rifle. I bet that 6.5-375R was a screamer.
