338-06 load development

Just put together a savage 338-06 for my new rifle build which will be my elk rifle when I go elk hunting. Was wondering what powder this cartridge favors best, for accuracy and getting the highest possibly velocity shooting 180-200gr bullets? Any info would be great. thanks

I have a 338-06 rem 700 action Hart Barrel 24 inches long the load I use is 59gr of H4350 and 225 Barnes X velocity 2710 . Works great on whitetail deer /black bear and elk

Try the 210 grain Nosler Partition in your 338-06.

That bullet was seemingly MADE for the 338-06.

Mine loves it, and it is pretty much a perfect universal bullet for the cartridge, that will excel on elk.

+1...I have shot 2 elk and a moose with this combo. All were one shot kills. To answer the question on why the 338-06 over the 35 Whelen...back when I was deciding between the two (early 90's), there were a lot more good hunting bullets available for the .338 caliber over the 35. The down-range ballistics were quite a bit better with the 338 over the 35 hunting bullets. Quite a bit has changed in bullets since that time. Good old H414 has worked well for me with the 210-225 grain bullets. I am planning on testing some IMR4451 with the partitions this summer to see how that works. Alliant is coming out with R16 sometime this year which may be another powder to try with the lighter bullets.

You really need to check out the 160g Barned Tipped Tripple shock, depending on what game animal you are using them on. Nothing wrong with Speed and no deer will stop them.
