.338-06 A-Square

Weatherby rifle with 24" Barrel.

Been sometime since I once reloaded.

Plan on Barnes 225 gr TTSX BT bullet.
Looking for some input on power recommendations.

Have you try Barnes site, Mine likes the Enduron powders with 180-250 gr bullets

I can no longer remember A2’s name.
First name initial A . Last name also A

Only have experience with 210 grain Nosler partitions. H414 worked well for me in a Sako.

Might want to move to reloading so more eyeballs will see this.
Cheers

For years elk hunting with my M70 .338-06 Improved has been successful using a load of 4320 over the Nosler 210 Partition. Never lost an elk using the rifle and load, complete penetration end-to-end on large bulls. Having a very large stash of that bullet, I've not used anything else in that rifle, as why change if it works so well?

I do use the Barnes TTSX 120gr in my 7-08 Improved, and it has the same record in the field using Varget.

Hello Rick,
Thanks, Most helpful!

I use RL 15 in my 338/06 with a nosler 225 grain bullet. I have a 338/06 AI also and have a good load with imr 4895 and 200 grain nolser e tip.

Never tried a Barnes, but IMR 4350 topped with 210 Partition works great on elk in my 338/06.

Hi,
I'm thinking of using RL 15. Most accurate on Barnes sight for 225 gr.
Thanks for your input.
Al

If you are able to start them at 2600+ fps, velocity will stay above 2000 fps to about 400 yards. I wouldn't count on reliable expansion below 1900 fps. Not an issue for typical hunting shot distances, but definitely not a long range hunting bullet.

I would take a hard look at dense, high energy powders. Hodgdon powders lists 6.5 StaBall for the 338-06. VV N560 might also be worth a look. I have experience loading for a .270/.280 based 338 wildcat that has a bit more capacity than the 338-06. RL-17 outperformed everything else I tried in it, by a wide margin. Alliant TS 15.5 might also be a good fit.

Unfortunately, Alliant powders have been difficult to obtain for the last several years and it looks like that trend is going to get much worse.
