.327 federal mag question

Hello all..I hope your safe, feet up, relaxing floating the forum. Not dealing with a flood or wild fire..just living a nice quiet lifestyle .
God Bless
Any way I'm so excited for deer season this year ..
I've been out blasting the spiders out of my dirty-30 barrel. 30-30..haha
Was shooting the 170 Sierra...thats way to much
I'm loading up 150 gainers..
First shot out of my rifle with the 170's blew my target to pieces and off a maple tree stump..from 35yrd.
Hunting in the north country most shots are less then 50yrds.
Which leads me to my intended question.
I have a 7" 327 ruger single seven..scoped
Is the 327 federal magnum enough for head shots on deer from 30-50 yards.
Freezer needs meat..not time to play..when I shoot..I want to anchor them this year and it could be more challenging and interesting to use my revolver..
But is it humanly enough
I would like to hear some thoughts on my topic..
30-30 or try out the .327...
If your liking the 327 idea..what load and bullet would you use.
Thanks all..
Safe shooting friends

I have no experience hunting with the 327 but if I wanted to be sure I would carry the 30-30 along also and use the revolver for my first shot and find out first hand.
When the 327 was first announced shooting from a 4” barrel it was on a par with the 357 125 grain bullet for energy, so I feel strongly that it with be fine with a well constructed 100 grain bullet from your 7” Ruger.Purely my .02
Matt

The 327 is what the 32 HR wanted to be. The 32-20 in a modern heavy revolver leaves them both in the dust.
I have several 327 single sevens. Run the heaviest bullet you can using all of the available cylinder length. I have not tried any of the XTP 32’s on large critters. I mention only the xtp because of availability, there are others out there but may be sparse. I run cast in mine when I can.
There may be some good cast options out there for the 327, have not looked for quite some time myself.
I run a custom mold for my 32-20 Buckeye, it will weigh 135-145 depending on alloy. It shot well in my 327, but uses up wayyyy to much case space to get decent speed.

That's a good idea..use the 327 but have the 30-30 on hand...thank you..
I've had my ammo packed up and most everything has been put away for the past 5yrs due to moving and just life changes.
I've recently couldn't take and pulled out the goods..im been blasting away with 32 s&w 32 h&r and the 327 federal..
I've cast bullets .and.developed loads I find accurate (enough) for me..before I packed everything up..I had about 300rds of each so it's been alot of fun...after getting reacquainted with the single seven..and the 327 its gotta be enough..
That's one zippy hard hitting bullet...boy can it smack steel..
So fun...even better if it can feed me...

I have shot damage control beaver with the 327, does a decent job on beaver. Would not be legal for deer, here. Don't recall an exit on any head shot beaver.
Have you tried to squirrel hunt with a 17hmr?..
Those little bullets explode and take the heads clean off..
Do you think the lack of exit is due to proper bullet performance..
If I can get an eye shot on a deer with a 327 I'm gonna bet its lights out...
I've been shooting @ 3" shoot-n-c targets at 40yrds...im old and shake now..or matbes it to much caffeine..
I'm gonna start to do upper chest and shoulder work out in evenings..push ups..dips chim ups...and see if it helps steady my trigger hand..
I've also noticed I like to grab the trigger with the tip of my finger so I pull every damn shot...so I got that defect to work on now..
Shooting a 100% a perishable skill...and that sucks..you young guys just you wait...hahaha
Oh the fun of life..never a dull moment

I’ve seen head shot deer with cartridges less powerful than the .327 and it’s lights-out. The .327 Fed is an intense revolver cartridge and I’m pretty sure it will do the job. Whether or not it’s legal for deer harvesting is another discussion.

Through the years, here in the south, I've seen head shots on deer turn out bad sometimes. You will be shooting bone. I have had far better results with spine shots. However, l don't use pistols. Watch a deer's head. When he's feeding, checking the wind, or looking around your target the angles and head are moving significantly. The spine at the base of his neck - not so much. Practice on some targets that have the vitals printed on them.

Since your from Ohio, you might want to check the laws on legal handguns for deer hunting, even if it will work, is it worth the risk?

5" barrel length minimum, .357 cal minimum.

I use a scoped 30 carbine 7 1/2" BH which is basically the same thing. Easy to get 1700+ fps with a 90 xtp and 296 powder. Also load resized .312 115 gr hcswc. Either will work fine on deer. XTP's are a pretty tough bullet. Some factory 327 hp.
