32 v-max vs 40 v-max

My buddy wanted to try the Speer 39 TNT on coyote, his rifle is 204 R. Hoping I'm with when he shoots a couple. If they behave at 204R velocity, they should be fine at practical/tactical velocity.
I'd be interested to see how they perform as well on yotes. I picked up a few hundred with plans to test on game at some point. I've had success with 223 and 50tnts and yotes but the 20 cal have a bigger open tip than the 50g 224s

32gr do not do well on coyotes, lots of splash wounds with all plastic tip bullets. We shot 8 coyotes last weekend and 3 ran off after getting up from splash wounds. My buddy was shooting 32gr. Factory vmax. 40s are better but still not great. Splash wounds or massive holes. Great pdog bullets but there are much better coyote bullets.

Northern dogs need a tougher bullet in the winter, more hair that the bullet needs to pass thru before expanding. I'm having good luck with the Berger 40 so far this winter out of my 20p. I really liked the BIB 40 last winter out of my 204 R. The Nosler 40 BT is the only tipped 20 cal bullet I would shoot on heavy fur coyote. Angle shots only make splashing more likely.

I just plugged a coyote at 527 meters yesterday with the 40 V-Max. It did the job, but I think that is about the edge of where velocity loss would be a concern. He came into our mouth call and got detoured with catching a mouse just long enough to drop the hammer on him.

I have found good loads with the 32's and the 40's. I do believe im going to stick with the 40's and try them out. I need to load up some more now and set the scope to the load before i can take it out to hunt. Im liking this rifle a lot. Recoil is so light.

I know a lot of folks really like the 35gr and 40gr Berger's in their 20 cals for slaying coyotes. If you're shooting factory ammo the tipped 32 and 40 grainers are about your only option but if you are loading your own I think the 35 or 40 gr Berger are a little better choice for coyotes.

I've never measured them for comparison but those BIB 40's and the Berger 40's look like they are nearly identical to one another and I recall that AP2020 guy shooting both of those 40's and if I recall the performed basically the same and they even had nearly the same POI.

I do handload and you have to with this 20 practical. And once berger produces the 40gr again im loading up on them. I like the 35gr in my 204, but dont want to burn them up in this 20p untill i can get more.

Another that should work well is the Nosler BT's. I've shot quite a few coyotes with 22 cal 40gr Nosler BT's and they always did a very good job and I'd imagine their 20 cal BT's would do just as well.

I love the nosler varmint ballistic tips in 22 cal 50gr. Can not find any in 20 cal. Right now the Hornadays are easy to find vs everything else.

Which ones and how many are you looking for? I may have some extras I'd sell if you're in need of them. I'll have to look in my cabinet but I may have regular and lead free Nosler 20 cal bullets. Without looking I don't remember if they're 32 or 40"s.

A great, inexpensive alternative is the 50 V-Max. I have probably shot more of those at squirrels and coyotes than all other bullets combined when shooting past 300 yards. They are VERY accurate in all five of my .223's, stoked with either Accurate LT32, Reloader 7 or IMR 8208XBR, depending on the rifle. I'd have gone for the 53 V-Max, but you used to be able to get the 50's in "Z-Max" 500-ct. boxes for about $50.00. Thankfully, I bought a lifetime supply of them before they discontinued that packaging. Still, in the 250-ct. boxes, they are very reasonable. I'm looking forward to trying the new heavier Hornady varmint bullet due to come out.

I have been shootong the 50vmax in 2 of my 223 and saving the noslers for another 223 that i have. I have a few 223s

I would say 40s for yotes. I have a friend whose shot many this fall using 32s no problem with his 204, I ve shot a couple with them amd they worked as well but I shoot the 40 in my 20p around 3650 and they work extremely well on yotes. We get some thicker hides and never a problem with splashes. Granted not shooting under 100 yards as youve stated but perform well at 300 and beyond as I'm sure under 100 as well. Got 2 back to back days 1 305 and 1 330 didn't move after getting hit. I don't shoot to bust shoulders either. Behind the shoulder and knocks them down pretty well.
Larger slug the better northern coyotes can be tough I’ve shot them with 20s 22s & I settle on the 6 mm calibers I have a 6 x 47 lapua 243 & they kill better & get out there in distance when be .
