I was wondering if anyone has used benchmark powder for 30x47 or another powder. I am probably going to use 118-7 Bibs. Any suggestions?
I've been using N133 in my Jag 2 which is a modified 30x47 for years with good results at quite a few score matches. I just started using that caliber after laying off from using it for about 3 seasons. It shot well enough at a short range IBS state score match on Sunday at 200 yards in VT to finish 3rd by getting creedmored out of 2nd. Years ago a lot of people were using N135 in that cartridge. That was the go to powder for many years in the Hunter class. I probably have around 50 pounds of it in 4 or 5 different lots and I tried to make it work and it never shot as good as 133. With a 2001 lot of 133 I was using 43.5 and was using at the time a 112 Bart and at the time it averaged around 3205 fps. I started out with that lot of powder then I ran out of it before finding some more and I had to increase the powder charge by a half grain to 44. I talked to Randy Robinette at length about the 30x47. He was surprised he said that I was using that much 133 because he said that he couldn't get that much in his case. He said he had good luck using H322 in his. I found out one thing not to use a 205 primer with that much powder in my case. It just didn't perform. Went I switched to a BR4 primer boy did that make a huge difference. You can see the difference between the 2 primers. I can shoot consistent high zero's to mid ones all day long with that combo. The first 2 pictures are from 2016 when the barrel was new. The last picture is the first time I shot the barrel after Bob Green freshened up the chamber. I had to up the charge to 43.8 to equal what I was avg for speed. It's a Hart 16TW and it had 2223 rounds on it when he did it in May of 2020. The barrel still shoots. I now use 43.5 but with my 115 bullet that I make. I also have tried LT32 in it and that shot pretty darn good also. Something that I learned years ago. All these groups don't mean a damn thing if you can't read the flags and pull the trigger at the right time.I was wondering if anyone has used benchmark powder for 30x47 or another powder. Jim, at one point N135 was the go-to powder in the various 30X47-48 cases.Years ago a lot of people were using N135 in that cartridge. That was the go to powder for many years in the Hunter class. Yes I knew that about the burn rate of the older N135. I have 90's vintage of the stuff that's why I tried all of the 4 or 5 lots that I had.Jim, at one point N135 was the go-to powder in the various 30X47-48 cases.
In the early 2000's, the burn rate of N135 effectively 'slowed down', as did N133. As a consequence, most competitive BR shooters with the 30X47-48 cases moved to the N133 and never looked back. We used a lot of N135 in our 30 WareWolf cartridge over the years ( .165 short 308W on the Lapua 308W case) and also made the transition to N133.
Good shootin'-Al
And shot it very well!I think I was about the only guy in the country shooting N-201 in my 30x47.......
Chad's probably got it all......And shot it very well!
