30X47 help

Guys, i have a 30x47 with a fast twist barrel that i bought a while ago and have yet to mess with much. It has a Rock
Creek 5R 1-10 twist SS barrel in it which may be a disadvantage but i am sure is could still be able to squeeze good accuracy out of her without rebarreling to a slower twist. Based on the rules of the game i want to build it for at a local club shoot i am building it for there may not be all that much advantage of being able to shoot in the .1s if i can shoot in the .2-.3S because i am not shooting off of a rest and it is not a visibly defined aiming point though it is always the same you just cant see it at 100 yds with a 4x scope. (basically silhouette with a nonviable but set and defined scoring ring that you have to line up parts of the animal to get to where you need to be) I would like to turn it into a great "score" gun for some local matches at a club i belong to. The match isn't an HBR match but similar ruses as to case capacity, only 4x scope and the kicker is that it is slung prone with regular but not cuff slings and no Highpower type jackets etc. Due to high power i am quite comfortable prone but i want to try to get the most out of the gun for accuracy and points that i missed this last time around by shooting a 6mm and not cutting the next line in.

any thoughts on bullets and powder combos for this rig and where i should start etc??? I have done a bunch of searching and about all i can find is for really light slow twist 110-115gn bullets.
thanks for the help as always,
Don

A 1 N 10 twist is not a fast twist barrel. That is the standard twist for about any 30 cal rifle and will stabilize up to around 200 gr bullets. Is your 30X47 made on the 300 Savage case? I have one made on the 300 Savage case that I picked up about 10 years ago that was from an estate of a man that died back in the 1980s and his wife sat on his stuff all those years. He had just had the rifle made shortly before he died. It was made on a Ruger 77 action with a CM heavy bull barrel of unknown maker with a Canjar (SP?) trigger. I got the dies and some cases and all his data. He had started using this for cast bullet matches of all things. I got this rifle CHEEP. Turned out to be a shooter. I use IMR 4895 and up to 168 Sierra Match Kings. I mainly use this rifle for deer hunting these days. 42 grs of IMR 4895 with cases made from Winchester 300 Savage, CCI BR primers, 125 Nosler ballistic tips will do 2850 fps and bug hole for accuracy and it kills deer like lightening struck them. This rifle has been extremely accurate with about any bullet and load I have run through it. It is my understanding from what I have read that the 30X47 on the Savage case was designed to to give you 100% load density with IMR 4895 to push a 168 gr Sierra Match King which was THE target bullet back then 2600 fps at muzzle which was suppose to be the best velocity for best accuracy at 100 yards for the hunter bench rest matches. That is what my rifle does.

Try some 150 gr custom bullets or some 168 sierras and 4895 or 748. And a 10 twist is fast for a 30x47.

will H-4895 burn significantly different than IMR 4895? i think i have some of the H. I know they are close in the powder burn chart but is there an advantage in one over the other that most people see making them have strong opinions on which is better? Also to the first responder thanks for the info its helpful but a 10 twist in a case like a 30X47 is pretty darn fast when compared to the more normal 14-18 twists you see in HBR in this cartridge. its not that fast for a 30 cal magnum but its all relative. I am not sure anyone would consider a 10 twist a slow twist barrel in 30 cal

H4895 should work just as good as IMR4895. H4895 is just slightly faster. Usually calls for between 1 and 2 grs less with H than IMR for most cartridges. I have always gotten great accuracy out of the Nosler Custom Competition 155 gr bullets in many 30 cal. rifles. My 30X47 has a 24" 10 twist barrel and I use 42 grs IMR 4895 for 2650 fps average with the 155 Nosler and the Berger VLD Hunting bullets. They both shoot very tight. I killed one deer with the Berger and it blew an exit hole that you could easily drop a baseball into. WICKED.
