30BR Project

Am going to build a 30BR rifle on a Barnard action possibly a Mastin stock this rifle will be HV Under 13.8lbs problem being where i am in Australia no one has a 30Br or reamers etc how do i get hold of a dimensional drawing so that my Gunsmith can make reamers etc any help with this it is either that or try to buy a barrel pre chambered Importing is a real pain now with having to have permits etc and then send them to US state dep etc etc
Any suggestions also Barrel length every one seems to have 24inch barrels would 26 inch be a problem.
All information gratefully received.
Jerry Stiller would have sold me a complete rifle but the paperwork and hair tearing i would have had to go through and possibility of it not getting through customs etc was too much trying to build Locally acquired.

Have done that a couple of days ago but as yet have had no reply also have left a request with reloaders nest.
There are a couple of shooters here in Australia using 30BR so if i can find one and get the dimensions.
Otherwise have thought of just necking up the 6br case and make the chamber as it is after necking up just make sure the shoulder stays at 30 degs.
Any one with any ideas on this.

Aussie,
Fred Lawler at Warners Bay in NSW is supposed to have a 30BR reamer. He should also have a print as well. I think most of the 30BRs in Queensland are actually 30 Dashers built by Phil Jones in Brisbane. I maybe wrong. I am thinking seriously of re barrelling my bench gun to 30BR but have the same problem with barrels. I know that one of the barrels being shot in Queensland is a Pac Nor and the other is a Tobler. Was also told MAB may make 17 or 18 twist barrels but haven't inquired yet. What projectile were you thinking of getting ? There is one bullet maker in Australia that I know of that is making 118 grainers on .900 jackets.

Cheers
Steve

Steve,
Have tried all except bloody Tobler and spoke to one of the blokes who has a 30BR he is useing a tobler and Tony Zujble from Townsvile did the reaming and fitting.
Charlie Robinson of Gladstone makes projectiles and bloody good ones have listed him for you on the aussie forum as well Ogre
07 49782529 tell him i sent you Bob in Mackay I need a discount next lot i buy

Ogre & Aussie,
Karl Keuhn is making 118gr. I normally only buy 6mms or 22cals. Aussie, are those projectiles made in Queensland 118grs on short jackets ? It would be good if they are. Alls we need are some barrels to suit. It should not be to much of a problem bringing barrels in from the States. I have a friend in Queensland bringing in rifles and other stuff with no problems.
I might contact him to find out if he's interested in bringing in some barrels with his next lot. There is limited interest so far but we might need to build one and try it to see if they are as good as I've read about. I want to re barrel my Stolle with a Heavy Varmint barrel and see how it goes in 100 & 200 yard benchrest. What will you be using a 30br for, hunter class or something else ?

Cheers
Steve

Yes Steve they are made in Gladstone Charle makes them he also shoots a 30BR i have just had word today mine is now going to have a 1-17tw Pac-Nor delux barrel chambered and fitted by Keith Hills ACTand will have Phil Mastins F-Class Tracker with 3inch foreend and yes i will be useing as HV and also Hunterclass Custom as that class will be in soon New books should be printed and ready to go barry Edgelys chasing that up as we speak. And forgot to mention all on a Barnard P Action.

Ogre,
I don't know Karls address. He lives in Sydney. He also makes 22, 6mm & 30 cals. Peter Flemming in Coffs Harbour now makes Elf projectiles in 6mm. Barry Warwick in Sydney also makes 6mms. Kats make 22 & 6mm in Queensland. CDC in Queensland also make 6mms and others I think. I don't know the addresses for them.
There is also a bloke in Townesville making 6mms called Zeros. His last name is Harrison. I have some of his projectiles to try today.
I normally run into some of them at shoots. Won't see Barry, Karl or Peter till July.

Bob,
Is Keith only ordering one barrel? Have a friend who is as keen as me to go 30br. I will order my own reamer and do the work myself. Probably should ring Kieth and find out if he will sell me 2 barrels.

Steve

Steve, keith is bringing in a few as far as i know so ring him.
Do you shoot Hunterclass.
I will be talking to keith in the next few weeks as i need to know what reamer he is useing i can send a couple of rounds down or send reamers that my friend here can make to exactly the chamber i want.
Email me. Go to www.ssaamackay.org.au and click on any of the email buttons they all come to me as i run it etc.

Just an update on this project. I have most of the dies have started reforming 6mmBR brass and have 40 done and neck turned.
The Pac-Nor barrel has left the US on the 27th of June so should be coming through customs soon and be chambered and fitted so WATCH THIS SPACE.

Bob,
May be wrong but the stock you are going to put on your 30br might not be legal for Hunterclass and short range benchrest. I saw a drawing in Sydney last weekend that shows the correct way to check if the stock is legal. I think it is also in the last benchrest rule book but mine is the 1998 edition. It would pay to check just in case.

Cheers
Steve

I can`t see why it wouldn`t be legal Steve as i have the 2005 Edition in PDF format the rule books should be printed now.
I will send off an email to Barry Edgley and see where they are.
What is it you thought would make it not legal. This will be shot a custom center-fire 14lbs weight limit and 3inch fore-end but i would like it under 13.5lbs as i want to shoot it in HV as well.

Bob,
It's hard to explain. Barry is probably the best person to ask. It has something to do with the butt stock measurements from the centreline on the bore. A friend of mine has fitted a tracker style stock to his switch barrel Fly/Bench gun. When I asked him if he was going to shoot it in short range benchrest competition he told me he couldn't because he measured it and it didn't comply by the rules. He read the rule out to me from the pre 2005 rule book. I just dont want you to spend a grand on a stock and only be able to shoot it at F/class. Otherwise I wont be able to kick your butt at Warwick.

Cheers
Steve

Steve i sent you a copy of the Final draft of rules and the only measurement you need to worry about is width of fore-end.
I know there used to be measurements done on amount of drop in stock etc but i think that was phased out many years ago when they bought in Custom Rifle.
I only got into bench-rest,Rim-Fire) in about 2000 got a couple of seconds in a zone shoot 2001 Struck Gold in Brisbane 2002 state shoot in custom 50m-100yds & agg and a third in open and a silver at nationals been picking up a win or place here and there since just using my 40 odd year old Anschutz so now i have been talked into Center-Fire so have asked a lot of questions and decide to go this way and am going to try to modify my Sako75 in 6PPC to get into the lighter weight,10lb)Class as for Hunter-class standard you have to have a working Mag.
Some of the rifles that shot at the Nationals were bloody near straight.

Bob,
I hope they have phased the stock rule out. I will be in Sydney next month and will talk to Tony Allinson about it. I have a spare tracker style, procal) stock for a 700 doing nothing at the moment and a spare trued Rem 700 with a 308 boltface. I might build my 30br on my spare parts and I will only need a barrel and dies.

Cheers
Steve

A couple of things:
Go to the 30br artical on 6br.com,main page)
Call or e-mail Pacific Tool and Gauge Inc. http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/ and get 30BR spec. of Randy Robinett reamer.

Well just an update on my 30BR project.
The Barrel is with Keith and he has the reamer ready to go but no Action, was informed on the 25 July that they were sitting in customs waiting to be cleared and i would be informed as soon as they clear so i could apply for permit to Acquire as you now need all info eg serial number etc before applying.
Hope they get their finger out and clear the bloody things soon is beyond a joke.

Update well the good news is the stock is being made and fitted next week so by the end of the week should be good to go.
I have all the numbers and have sent off the papers for a Permit to Aquire.
So by the time it gets back the rifle should be ready to be sent YeeeeeeeeHaaaaaa! And it ain`t even christmas yet.
