30BR powder & bullets

what other powder have any of you tried with success in your 30br other then H4198 , until my custom bullets arrive I am useing Speer 125 TNT and Berger 115 GR

Thanks

Berger is a good bullet I have more testing to do with it and others to find the one that does the best so for with Berger .3moa at 200yards got to get below .25, really I want in the .1s, I have some cheeks on the way and some BIBs on order, I find the TNT is not a bad bullet but only .5 moa with it

H4198, H4198, H4198, ... and H4198. Because it works! I don't mess with proven success. The science for the 30BR has already been worked out.

Once I find a case, powder/Load, bullet, primer, seating depth, and neck tension that works, I stick with it.

I spend my time practicing AND TUNING over a good set of wind flags. That's where the real gains are made.

WIND FLAGS are as important to tuning, and an INTEGRAL PART of the process, as much as case, powder/Load, bullet, primer, seating depth, and neck tension are. Don't leave home without them.

IMR 4198 has worked well for me. It was what I started out with, because nobody had H4198. Now nobody has IMR 4198. Go figure.

Seems H4198 is to a 30BR the same as Varget is to a 6mBR but I like to have a alternative if by some chance I can't find 4198 locally and just for curiousity sake I will more then likely try N130 and Norma 200 , you never know until you try and I have other guns that I can shoot these powders in they won't go to waste, just as I started this thread my BIB bullets came knocking at the door, I am looking forward to shooting them, I have a small range in my back yard of 165 yards but it is 5 pm here and the sun will be in my eyes, so will head for the range in the morning.

Thanks all for input

Frank

N130 has been a more consistent powder than H4198 for me over the years. I still use 4198 at times. H322 can also be made to work well. I have also used Norma 200, but in limited quantity. It is indeed more dense than the above mentioned powders.

Frank,

If you plan on shooting that 30BR just for fun, then keep on playing with it. But if you plan on competing with it, you need to buy the powder (and yes I will suggest H4198) in 8 pounds kegs. You want to keep the same lot going so you know that your velocity will be the same. Worst thing you can do it get a high lot, then follow it up with a low lot of powder. You may have to go up/down as much as .4 grains the keep the same velocity. Buy that powder from Powder Valley and be done with it. Time it right so that you can order 5000 primers, and double dip on that haz mat fee. $140 for 8 pounds is a great deal. Thats only $17.50 a pound. Top that off with a case of primers, then your haz mat fee only upped your powder by $2 a pound. Where are you going to find 1 pound of powder locally for less than $20? You know you will use that powder eventually.

Hey Wes, I do plan on competing with it but being retired I have allot of free time to play, I loaded some of my BIB that came in on Thursday evening with 33 GRs of H4198, I started by taking a fire formed case and useing a .326 bushing and just barely seating bullet then I jammed it bullet went smooth and easy, jam length was 1.686 measureing from ogive, then I loaded 10 rounds each from 1.686 , 1.681,1.676, 1.671 and last 1.665, I used a .324 bushing on loaded rounds, end result was outstanding at 200 yards 5 shot group at 1.665 thats .020 jump from jam .381 of an inch resulting in a moa of .181, I am pleased with the results.

The gun is a Stockaid stock I bought for $200 out of the mold allot of work sanding and fitting it, the rest was done by Lester Bruno, Savage Target action blue printed and a 25 inch Krieger 1/17 twist barrel weight is 13.7 pounds I need to get that down .2

So off to a good start we will try to improve before match is October
