30BR Neck separation

So education is a good thing....

Read a lot on here about case neck separation on caliber 3BR. It's got me thinking as I just started shooting that caliber, what if it happens to me?

I have always carried a Brownells "broken case extractor " , caliber 308 in my range bag. Just wondering if it would work to remove a broken neck?

Having never had it happen to me I have no idea how "stuck" those necks get?

Thanks guys!

I would think the 30BR would be the last cartridge to have a neck separation with. One very prominent long time BR shooter reported he had well over 7000 rds. on his rifle using the same set of brass that he actually started out with that rifle. I have some brass with app. 20 firings on it and it looks as good as it did when I began using it several years ago. Primer pockets are still as snug as a bug in a rug as well.

I can't recall ever seeing a post about 30BR neck separation. Using the search I can't find any either. You sure your talking about the 30BR? That brass will last indefinitely. I've seen people talking about firing it 50+times.
Yes Sir. I was researching cutting into the shoulders via Google. It pointed to several threads on this forum discussing neck separation. Not necessarily the title of the thread mind you.

Hey Bill, yes Sir I read that as well.

In my case I was neckturning Lapua 6br cases this weekend. I was surprised how many split using a PMA expander, when Peterson split zero.
Maybe it was a bad batch as quite a few fit the shell plates really poorly as well.

Yea sounds like maybe a bad batch of brass. Normally if one lubes the inside of the necks properly and runs the expander into the mouth slowly not very many cases are lost.

I've never seen a neck split like that. Albeit, I've only expanded maybe 300 pieces. Usually when necking up even with a single expander, I got one case that will be crushed into the shoulder. Just curious, what is your procedure?

I have only done Peterson brass. Like yourself I haven't done all that many.
PMA carbide 30BR neck up mandral. Liberal dose of Royal case lube.
Boy, did they squeal! :)

Wait, last question I promise. a 30BR carbide mandrel? PMA makes a "30cal from 6mm neck up mandrel." Which is what I have. Are you talking about that or a straight up 30cal carbide mandrel being used? I'm a big ole nothing in the shooting game, but if you used a straight 30cal carbide mandrel that may have been the issue.

Edit: this is what I use. Its got a long taper too it. https://www.pmatool.com/30cal-from-6mm-neck-up-mandrel/
