30br neck expanding?

Im going to be doing up a bunch of brass and was wondering what you all use for lube on your expander? Im going to be using a PMA 6mm-30cal expanding mandrel. Whats your process? How do you clean the inside of the neck after necking up or after turning the necks as i don't have a tumbler .

Thanks

just did 200 of them. used a 6mm to 30cal expander as you are. for lube when expanding the neck, i used imperial wax. then i went and turned all the brass and used pma lube. then i had the fun of cleaning all cases (i used a tumbler, but you can do it by hand). after all cases were cleaned of lube, they all had to be fire formed — make sure that you find some cheap bullets to do that (i used tnt 125gr). i didn’t loose a single case and everything turned out well.

thanks
adam

I've been trying different ways for a new to me 30br barrel. Pistol powder and cotton patch, 6.5mm mandrel and then 30 cal mandrel, and just running the 30cal. whidden expander.
Peterson brass buckled at shoulder trying to go right to 30 cal.
Lapua was just fine doing it this way.
Dedicated FF barrel would be easier for using the fast powder and cotton patch or wax plug.
Oal seems to be only big difference.

Send them to DJ . They will come back perfect. Just my two cents.. Tommy

Can't send to DJ as I'm in Canada. I thought forming them by shooting was for the longer chamber.

Some 30BR chambers are the same length as a factory 6BR where the ones designed around necking up are only 1.510 where the 6br is 1.540?

I think you are speaking OAL, but I looked at it as body length. My brass started at 1.540.

The last bunch that did, I used 90 weight gear oil. Didn’t lose a piece of brass. Washed them in solvent to clean them up.

Thats right. Overall length. When you neck up the brass gets shorter then you trim to 1.500 oal. No i suppose you could trim to 1.500 then fire form but thats seem like alot of brass to trim off.

im concenerd about getting the expanding lube and cutting oil out of the inside of the case without a tumbler. .

I’m new to the 30br and used a K&M one step expander with Imperial wax. I also used the Imperial wax to lube the necks for turning. I just wiped the inside of the necks with a Q-tip and then annealed the cases again so that took care of the remaining lube. I don’t think it would be an issue fire forming the brass with the remaining lube if I skipped the annealing.

I will fire form the brass without a bullet or neck up in several steps increasing the mandrel size next time because a lot of the necks were crooked (concentricity) using one step expander mandrel. I had a hard time properly turning the real crooked necks. I couldn’t find anybody that makes a full length die without a bushing so I could straighten the necks before turning. Not sure if my technique caused the concentricity issue. Maybe your PMA mandrel will work better.

Them necks will straighten out when you pull the trigger lol..Ive never worried to much about the concientricity of the necks till after fire forming.Has always worked out good for me..
