30BR..muzzle brake?

I even use them on my 22 br's, if I had a 30 BR I would use them on that one also....
I like to see the shot in the scope.....

What do you want to do with it? I purchased a 30BR barrel for my Savage with SSS brake. I made no friends shooting it at a club match. Some BR events don't allow brakes. My was a 1:16 twist that I used to shot the 135 Bergers. It made it a little milder. I personally don't have a big problem with recoil on the 30BR using 115-125 bullets. But I grew up on a 308w and never had the joy on shooting a 6ppc with 66-68 bullets.

One of the places I shoot doesn't allow them or I would put one on in a heartbeat. There is talk of them putting all the guys who have breaks on one end and if they do that I'll probably break everything I own. They work...

a couple of thoughts... if you go with a brake have a thread protector made up at the same time then you can shoot with it on or off... there is a slight diff ""' on the POI with it on/off "slight"

also you may want tohave the break turned so as the gases expel lt. an rt. especially if you shoot prone
my 30br 13.5lb rifle has one an there is very little diff""" in kick but muzzle jump is better - with

Ok guys...I have to ask. I'm building a 30BR as we "speak." But are some of you having that much difficulty in controlling your rifles during firing that they need to be "tamed down?" I'm not very big myself but I've shot a 30BR and my .308 all day and never have had a problem with control and both are now Benchrest quality rifles I shoot from the Bench. I mean we're not talking .30-06 here and many of the world's 30br records (that I'm aware of) were shot from rifles without anything on the barrel's end. I'm not trying to be critical of anyone here but just don't understand why a break would be needed on a 30br (Preacher excluded), that's all. Thanks.

That's what I would do,, Brake / thread protector..Just want to get it "return better"
I guess my rest/bag setup is not as good as it could be. But I know on my 6.5/284 that there is a world of difference in return to target with the break on/off.
It doesn't need to help felt recoil, just tame it down in the bags...Harv ;)

It all depend on the rules. If they have none then I would do it. The nice part about it if done right you can also put a turner on it. I shoot with both a break an a tuner combo.
My 15 year old Grand Daughter shot her first center fire other then 223 that she had shot at 100YD.I let her try her first shots at 1000 YD. We have a IBS target at 1000 YD match monthly.
Her first 10 shot was 14.5 The second 10 shots was 7.2 . Without a break she never would of shot anything near that. Larry

I'm wearing both plugs and muffs trying to protect what is left of my hearing. If someone showed up at a BR match with a brake and they let them shoot, I think I would just go home. I see lots of tuners, but I have never heard of anyone wanting a brake for a BR gun. I have a very torn up right shoulder that is not fixable, and I shoot a 30 BR and a 308 HBR right-handed completely free recoil and have no issues. I do use a Cabela's strap on pad, but that's it. Shooting BR is like sex. If it doesn't feel good, you're probably not doing it right.

Ditto^^. This is the reason I only attend Registered BR Tournaments. Competing in shoots conducted under IBS/ NBRSA rules, one knows what to expect, there are assigned EXPERIENCED officials: RO, 3 Referee's, Statistician, and a Scorer. It would be disconcerting to travel a few hundred miles to a match to find an anomaly to rules you are used to. If one does have success at Registered Match, it is recorded for posterity...it means something.
OP- Brakes = advantage to shooter ( most shoot better with less recoil)/ disadvantage to those shooting adjacent to your position.

Muzzle breaks are certainly a curious item. Seems to be plenty of evidence that they "work" ... whatever "work" means. As concerns benchrest shooting, here are some of my thoughts, never having had one and only ever shot a 50-cal. with one on:

1. If recoil is too much, buy/build a different caliber.

2. What do I have to "see in the scope" in competitive shooting? I shoot 30BR free-recoil and have no problem seeing bullet placement on the target.

3. One of the rudest most inconsiderate things I've ever had happen when at the range doing load testing is for someone to set up beside, or even several benches away, with a muzzle break. The noise is greatly increased, the muzzle blast disturbs everything on the bench and blows my crosshair off the target, etc.

4. It always seems as if the shooter using some "blaster" caliber sees the muzzle break and the accompanying havoc it causes to those near him as some sort of extension of his macho/ego.

Having said that, it does seem there is some redeeming grace to them, though probably not in 100-200-300 benchrest. I believe NBRSA and IBS both still prohibit them except on long-range.

It would seem they have a purpose on some hunting rifles and in that usage they are less of a problem to other shooters.

Long-range competition has a lot of dynamics that are different from "point-blank" BR and if the breaks work well there and are tolerated, then that's great. If IBS was to allow breaks in short-range BR, I would no longer compete because of the disruption and annoyance they cause on the line.

Something to add, when I shoot Hunter, I have a 80mm Celestron spotting scope on a small tripod on the bench. If I forget to lock it to keep it from swivelling, when someone as much as two benches down shoots, it actually turns the spotting scope. The front of the scope is in back of the muzzles on the line, and no shooters are using brakes. That is enough blast to suit me fine.
