30Br from 308 brass

Is it posible to make 30br cassings from 308 brass. I have tones of brass in 308. I was thinking the necks would be thick but that is nuthing a little turning could not solve. Also I could get the chamber cut a little bigger for the extra brass.

This would be a hunting rifle not a true BR rifle.

What do the experts think?

seems like a lot of work
and you will have large primer pockets

if you ca nmake/buy a forming die that will allow you to push the shoulder of the 308 cases back without wrinkling/lap folding the brass it might just work

last time I tried to do a big shoulder push back Ikept getting lap folds in the brass at the neck

If I annealled the brass the cases just collapsed

There is a type of forming die that has replaceablew collets in it rather than bushings like the redding dies etc

will post a link if Ican find what imean

The original wildcat cartridge, the 308 x 1.5", dates to the 1960s and was made exactly as you described. It worked then so there's no reason it cannot work now. Probably no reason to turn or ream necks unless you have a tight neck chamber.

That particular batch of .308 brass used to form the 30 X 1.5 was not standard production .308 brass but a special run. It was thinner walled and just hard enough to keep from collapsing when forming. Remington quit making it and I haven't seen any of it in years.

But go ahead and try, it'll work if you get the right technique but it's seems like way too much work and you don't have the small primer with it either. Either way you'll be doing some annealing.

You're thinking of the Remingtom URBR brass that came out in the late 1970s. It was meant to provide Benchrest shooters with brass that they could form to the 22, 6mm, and 7mm Benchrest cases to compete with the newcomer PPC. There's lots of that brass still around. How many boxes do you want?

The original 308x 1.5' was made from 308 brass. There was also a 308 x 41mm made the same way, and then a slew of wildcats in other calibers and case lengths followed.

I've had a 308 x 1.5' rifle and made a lot of brass for it, from 308W. No problems at all.
