30BR freebore question

I'm in the same situation right now. I have been told that the freebore will depend if you are going too shoot the light bullets or heavy bullets. I've been told 0 freebore for the light bullets and .020 freebore for the heavy bullets.

I wouldn't see .020" making much of a difference, especially with the long neck that the 30br has. Heck 6br reamers can vary between 0 and .114" or so. I think a little freebore helps accuracy, it acts little like a "guide" to help the bullet get straighter alignment as it starts down the bore. Just my opinion.

My 30BR Robinett reamer is a 0 freebore and it works just fine with 110's all the way up to 150's.

Can't go wrong with any of the replys. Zero freebore will put most standard configuration bullets up to 125s about half way in the neck with dies such as Harrells 30br FL with bushings sizing about 2/3 to 3/4 of the neck. Most like lots of neck tension and shoot great with a jam.

I am going to order a 30BR reamer. What freebore diameter and throat angle should I go for?

Let this be your guide:

Bullet Weights and Profiles by Al Nyhus

"30BRs work best with bullets not exceeding 125 grains. Jacket lengths should be either .925″ for the 110-112gr bullets or 1.00″ for the 118-125s. Ogives can be either 7 or 10 tangent ogives, but be aware that the shorter .925″ jackets require virtually no freebore length. The ‘zero freebore’ chambers can also be used with 1.00″ bullets.

I currently use a .030″ freebore with the 1.00″-jacketed bullets and this works fine. Twist rates from 1:15 to 1:18 work well, with the edge going to the 1:17 and 1:18 versions at this point.

A 1:15 twist rate allows use of the 125gr bullets built on 1.080″ jackets, but the freebore may be too long if you wish to change to the shorter 1.00″ bullets, especially if you prefer the 10-ogive models.

I suggest setting your chamber and freebore up for the 1.00″-jacketed bullets, regardless of twist rate."

Personally, I use Zero freebore with a 1.5 degree throat angle. I'm currently using Ronnie Cheek's 9 ogive, 118 grain, .308 bullets with a .925" jacket and getting excellent results. Mathematically, the 9 ogive matches up with the 1.5 degree throat [actually it's 1.54 to be exact].

Note: See the "Throat Angles For Various Ogives" Chart down this page: http://www.riflebarrels.com/articles/bullets_ballastics/throat_angles.htm

Thanks for the replies guys but I never asked about the length. That information is easily available.
What I wanted to know is the diameter and angle.

Thanks for the angle info Outdoorsman!

Sara and I both use 110 Gr., 7 Ogive bullets, made on .925 jackets, seated on the lands, in a chamber that has .050" FB. I have absolutely no complaints and do not plan to change anything on either of our rifles.

You originally asked: What freebore diameter and throat angle should I go for?

Freebore is a length or distance. See this: http://media.photobucket.com/image/picture%20of%20freebore/Tomate_08/freebore2.jpg

Reamer neck diameter is .330"

Dave Kiff at PT&G has what you want. Talk to Dave personally: His link: http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/

Outdoorsman, in addition to a length the freebore also has a diameter and it's not going to be the neck diameter. As I posted earlier I use 0.3085". If you'd like to see it on a reamer print I'll post one for you. It's on every PT&G print I've ever seen.

You're absolutely correct. Length & Diameter is the total dimension. I just pulled my 30BR PT&G print. .3085" is right there in black and white. I must have had a senior moment. Thanks!
