30BR for Tactical Rifle?

Greetings everyone:

I'm new to this forum, so please forgive me if my questions sounded a little noob-ish...Anyway, I'm very interested in building a tactical rifle chambered in 30BR using Savage Short action receiver...Has anyone done this? If so, what's your experience with it?

Also, I know that the experts recommand bullets not exceeding 125 grs. for 30br., However, has anyone tried using heavier bullets? Would 155gr. Lapua Scenar be too long for 30BR?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Boomer:

The 30BR is inherently accurate and is one of the finest cartridges for 100 and 200 yards.

If your tactical shooting is going to be within 200 yards it may be one of your better options.

There are many articles and this round is relatively easy to develope loads for. It to has very mild recoil.

If your tactical shooting is going to be at longer ranges and having to deal with wind conditions you may be better off with a 6 BRX, 6 Dasher, 6 X 47, .243, 6mmRem, .260Rem, 6.5 X 55, 6.5 X .284, 6.5 Rem Mag. The aforementioned may serve you better from 600 to 1000 yards.

In target shooting the distances are known and constant. Reading the wind is the challenge. In tactical shooting distances are unknown, vary, and the wind is still a factor.

Many tactical shooting events require that the shooter use a .223 or 308. Check out the rules before you buy and chamber a custom barrel.

Matt, I think that Nate, rustystud) has given you some great advice. As great a round as the 30BR is, it's real attributes can only be only realized in a full race BR gun designed and built as a specialized, single purpose tool. Much of these attributes are subtle in nature and could never be identified, let alone turned into an advantage, in any sort of a 'Tactical' rig.

Tough to beat a plain vanilla, boring 308W in a real World Tactical rig, or a 'play army' type of tactical look alike.

Just my thoughts on it.

Good shootin'. -Al

I have shot my 30BR out to 1000 yards now useing 125gr projectiles not fantastic results at 1000 but they got there on a very windy day.600 yards no problem and in the last two years have taken out the high score on a single target at 500m in one of our bigger shoots. These were in Bemchrest comp but this cartridge can do it.

I am building a 30BR rifle with 1-12 twist. My plan is to use it with 155gr. Lapua Scenar bullets and if my load data is correct, I think I will be able to reach some 2.500 fps with it easily.
With the wind capabilities of this Scenar bullet, it may have some, not great) potential on a Tactical rifle and competition style.

But, I agree that for a one mission rifle - Tactical Rifle - there are better cartridges with more velocity and specially more reliable feeding from magazine.

I just set up a 30BR heavy barrel on a savage action, 1:16 twist though. I am just getting started with this round.

I dont see whay you could not set up a 30BR to shoot heavier longer bullets. You just need a faster twist and more freebore.
