30BR bullet weight with a 1-14”

I shoot a 30 B-R with a 1-14" twist rate barrel and shoot Sierra's 110 gr. JHP out of it at 100 & 200 yards.

100 yard accuracy: 5-shot groups are consistently smaller than a single bullet hole from 357 magnum.

200 yard accuracy: 5-shot groups are consistently smaller than a single bullet hole from a 44 magnum.

I no longer shoot competition, but this makes for one heckuva coyote rifle for shooting close range.

Addendum:

I tried several custom bullets in this rifle and for some reason, it didn't like any of them.

The second best bullet in this particular rifle was the SPEER 125 gr. TNT.

Both bullets shot best with a Remington 7 1/2 primer and H-4895 powder in Match prepped Lapua cases.

The Sierra bullet shot best .007 into the rifling, and the SPEER bullet shot best .010 into the rifling.

If you are consistently shooting 5 shot groups at 100 yards under .050 and 200 yard groups under .150 you should shoot in competition. You would win almost every time. But maybe that would get to be too boring.

I have shot my fair share of groups like that in registered competitions over the years, especially back in the mid 80's all the way through the 90's, but now, failing health keeps me out of the game.

Boat tail bullets in the 125-130 grains class should work well in that 14 Twist. Overspinning bullets is not as bad as folks say. Aggs around .150" should put you in the winner's bracket in score matches. If you're shooting UBR with a 30 cal specific target you may need tighter groups. I shoot both 17 and 18 twist in my 30 BR.

He did mention he no longer shoots competition.
Which to me indictaes he has or used to
Some of us have "been there done that" and the whole competition environment no longer appeals to us.

Similar to ....Just because a guy is "Single" does not mean he is "available"
Just because a guy knows how to shoot, does not mean he is available to be in competitions,
or that the competition environment appeals to him.

where did you get your group size info???????
The poster said groups less than .357 at 100 and less than .44 at 200 yards.

Simple math. A 30BR bullet is .308 diameter, a .357 is .357 bullet diameter. .357 less .308 is …… wait for it ……. .049 or less than .050. Bullets don’t always tear a perfect diameter hole in target paper but comparing one to the other it’s close enough.

I think you are terribly confused what a .357 group is, you don't add or subtract

We all know .05 is a pipe dream consistantly, and only exists in a fantasy worl,,, or cyber world,,,,,

What is the go to bullet weight in a 1-14”t barrel in 30BR
It's about the length, not primarily the weight.

In commonly available custom bullets, anything made on the 1.00" jacket is going to work well...regardless of what the weight is. On that jacket, you can make a great bullet from about 115 gr to the lower 130-ish range.

If you're looking for a 'big box' bullet, some time spent on the JBM site listing bullet lengths can be revealing and helpful. For example, Sierra makes a 125 gr. 'Match' bullet that's much longer than a traditional 1.00" jacketed 125. In a 14 twist, a few taps on the Stability tab there will give some answers.

Hope this helps. -Al

You can run the 125's with it, but between the heavier bullet and reduced case capacity, the velocity takes a big hit. My dad built one with a 12 twist barrel specifically to run the heavier bullets. It took 14 clicks on the scope at 200 vs 7, and was wind sensitive as a rimfire. He switched back to normal 115gr bullets and beats the brakes off us at 200 now.

Actually I did perhaps misstate slightly, the original poster stated he was shooting quote “100 yard accuracy: 5-shot groups are consistently smaller than a single bullet hole from 357 magnum.” Considering the 357 magnum hole is actual bullet diameter of .357 inches and the 5 shot groups are consistently smaller than that then the maximum size of the hole produced by 5 shots from his 30BR would be .356 inches outside to outside of the hole produced by his 5 shots. .356 less .308 bullet diameter is .048 inches. He never mentions the group size, just that the holes are smaller than a .357 bullet hole. Same applies to his 200 yard statement.
