My buddy just acquired a new .308 with a 11.25 tw.
Wants to develop a load for 100-1000yds.
Recommendations for bullets, powder.
Thanks

Skip imr 4064 and reloader 15 if it gets really hot where he shoots.

Bullets (ordered by price): Some higher on the list will require sorting for long range use especially if switching lots. Sort tipped bullets by bearing surface and OTM bullets by bearing surface and nose length.

barnes match burner 155/175
hornady eld 155-178
hornady 168 amax
nosler 175 rdf
sierra 155 palma match king
sierra 169 /175 match king
sierra 155-175 tmk
lapua 155/175 scenar L
berger Hybrid target 155/168
berger 175 otm tact
berger 185 juggernaut (not the 185 hybrid)

The new 169 SMK's are doing quite well for me for both short and long range and the price is pretty good for them right now. I also like the Berger185 Jugs for long range, though they may be hard to find. For the 169 SMK's, IMR-4064, AR-Comp and Varget works well for me . . . as does H4895. IMR-4064 and H-4895 worked well for me with the Jugs.

PS: my barrel is a 10:1 twist, but these bullets should work well in a 11.25:1 too.

Lapua Scenar 155's / Lapua brass / Varget 44.0g +/-
Might be a bit light bullet for 1000 yds, tho.

Interesting considering we shot 155 gr. Sierra MK for decades at 1,000 yards in open sight Palma rifles, prone.

The newer Sierra 169 gr. MK have been holding up their end of the bargain when shooting longer ranges out to 1,000 yards.

Otherwise I like to shoot any of the 175 gr. Match bullets and the 178 gr. Match bullets.

Your buddy can run the heavier bullets, of course, but sometimes the highly acknowledged BCs start to fade when the weight becomes too much for the .308 case capacity.

If he's getting ready for competition, test in the barrel and rifle he wants to use. If it's mostly for fun, stick with the lighter bullets and save a little money.

Enjoy!

:)

Everyone has mentioned great powder and bullet combinations, my go to load is Lapua brass, 43-44 grs of Varget under a 175 SMK out of my 24" Rock 1-11.25" twist barrel, works well out to 1000yds.

For a precision practice load with significantly reduced recoil, look to Nosler data, H322, 150/155 class bullets. I shoot piles of this load, typically into very small holes.

Or for even less recoil and still plenty effective on all but hard set rams at 500m, try the same powder with Speer 125 TNT bullets. Accurate, soft on the shoulder, easy on the wallet.

I have a 1-11 twist barrel on a 308 that eats 155 lapua scenars and 44.4 gr of H4895.
They have a MV of around 2850 and very accurate at 500-600 yards and though I’ve not taken them to a grand I’m fairly confident they will get there

I'm running them in a 1:10 and also found that 2850 was a sweet spot. I'm using Shooters World Precision.

Thats a good looking rig.

From the opposite end of the quality spectrum my first ever bolt gun was a savage 10T from cabelas. I threw an swfa fixed 16 on it with some vortex pro low rings and a harris 9-13. Grand total just under $800.
42.4 grains of varget at 2660 fps
2.175 b2o 2.83 average oal with 178 eldm .015" off lands
lapua large primer brass with fed 210m primers.
average 5 shot groups in the .5s-.6s range.

Gun was the ugliest damn thing you have ever seen. But the trigger tuned down near 1lb without locking up with hard bolt close and aggressive handling and the bolt wore in to move like silk. The whole gun would hum pleasantly when you closed the bolt shooting prone. Must have had a tight bore too as it hit pressure early but every bullet put through it had a higher trued bc than expected. Sold it to my brother to fund another project as our new range went out to 1200 and this gun lost its telekinetic powers past 800. I go over to his house once in a while just to hold it and feel the nostalgia.

Thanks for the compliment. Looks like the thing was shooting lights out no doubt. I love it when a plan will come together with hunting class rigs and shoot tight. Good job Bro.

Now, that is a lights out load. Looks like benchrest shooting to me.
