Starting to think about building a 308 for F/tr after shooting my 223 at the Texas Long Range State Championship and doing ok with it,it leaves me wondering what if.I am thinking about going with a .170 on the freebore and want to know what to go with on the neck,i will be using palma brass and I would rather stay away from neck turning. So what do you fellas recommend thanks.

If you dont want to turn necks, then .342-.343 should be good.

Whatever comes on the 2013 USFTR reamer will work.

I finished my build a couple of months ago. I don't turn necks either. My gunsmith cut my Bartlien 10 twist 31" Heavy Palma blank to .168 freebore and .342 neck. Using normal Lapua brass, Berger 200.20x bullets, and Varget at 10/1000th off the lands, the cartridge fits great and is a performing accurate and consistent!

Good luck with your new build!

Heaviest 30" barrel you can make weight with in 10 twist
2013 FTR reamer
200 grain bullets
Varget or 4895
Don't feel bad about your performance, that wind was tough on the 284's.

Not feeling bad, that little 223 held its own against the 308s just thinking I would do better at a LR using a 308.

In your shoes I might not get rid of the .223 quite yet. A .223 shooting 90s was just used to win the 2017 Sierra Cup MR match in F-TR at St. Louis Benchrest Club today (3x20 @ 600 yd). No, it wasn't my .223, much as I would have liked that. The wind was pretty challenging and the 2nd and 3rd place finishers in F-TR were both shooting 308s with 200.20X bullets. In theory, that should have been a clear advantage, but even more clearly wasn't enough of an advantage today. I'd suggest hanging on to your .223 for MR matches at least ;).

You did well last weekend with the .223 but I do think at 1000 yards the .308 definitely has an advantage if you can handle more recoil using the heavier bullets running hard. With that being said the .223 makes a great midrange gun!

As for your original question, the 2013 FTR reamer with .170 freebore from PTG will fit the bill as others have previously stated........;)

Thanks fellas,I will most definitely hold on to the 223 for MR but will be building a 308 for long range.Went back down to Bayou's today and shot the 1000yd club match was having some vertical issues as was everyone else just a lot more with the 223.
