.308 win F/TR chamber

Well, i finally got my barrel after about a 19 week wait. Ordered from northland shooter supply....what a great company, ordered several from them. Anyhow, barrel is a criterion 8" twist with MTU contour and finished at 28" and has the .308 win F/TR chamber. I plan on shooting nothing but 200-230 grain bullets loaded long since I put this on a remington 700 L/A. Was thinking either some N150 or H4350 for powder. Anyone else here recommend anything else? Thanks

N150 43-44g Lapua Palma Brass 200.20x CCI 450 Primers.

I dont know anyone shooting an 8 twist so the powder charge needs to be walked up to. Start 42g and go up in 0.2 g increments.

If you can manage it and dont mind the extra expense i would try the 215 berger hybrid and start at 41g of N150.

Please let me know how it goes. Im interested in your findings with that twist rate. You will hit pressure sooner than most due to the force on the bullet to spin so fast.

I ordered some 215 hybrids to start with. I will say this, i talked my late best friend in an 8" twist CBI and it absolutely hammered.....even with 165 game kings

It has a lot of freebore....not sure the exact number, but i have a 215 grain bullet of some flavor....looks like a berger, just don't know which one, and ran it into chamber with a modified case and the bullet is barely in the case mouth

Well, got the barrel broke in today. She has a tight neck so looks like I will have to trim the necks down to the .012 ballpark.

Edit, i called Northland and they said the neck is .342 also the freebore is .168. For barrel break in i just used the 215s and CFE223 at 40.0 grains and 3.191 inches.

I also must say, i trimmed the necks back because it was very hard to close the bolt. I have my FL die set up properly, and the ogive is still a long ways from the lands on a loaded round. So, I am unsure why the rounds are hard to close bolt on. Maybe I will set die up to bump shoulders a little more too

.342 is a no turn neck. Sounds like they used a standard team reamer. You are loaded way long for a .168 freebore. I use a 3.190 coal in a .250 freebore .015 off w a 215 Berger Hybrid. I bet you are jamming hard.

Found the problem.....my LnL Guage was messed up....got it squared away the sliding rod wasn't in all the way and it was causing my loads to be loaded way long after measuring.....got it fixed. Those bergers will actually kiss the lands at 3.160 so they were being jammed a lot before!

You are going to have a hard time keeping the bearing surface above the shoulder/neck junction with that short of freebore. you may try a shorter bullet like a 185 Juggernaut and see if you can get it to stabilize with a 1:8 twist. Ideally, you would have wanted a 1:9 or 1:10 twist and a .250 freebore.

I wanted the 8" twist and long freebore. I honestly wanted to do 230 smk, but I got these 215 bergers for free since I had cabelas points lol

What velocity were your break in rounds?

You need nearly 2550 to beat a 20x at 2650, that's going to be hard to do in that short freebore with sane pressure.
