I am looking to build a new hunting rifle and per a previous thread I am thinking 30 cal for this one. Maybe .284 I like things that are different and make people say "WHAT!" Does anyone else have exsperience with one of these??? there is something about a 180 grain going 3550fps

Now that I see what you are looking for, I have a suggestion.
Consider a .30 Lapua with a long barrel. That is the Ferrari of the .30 cal world and has the WOW factor in the best of company.
You could launch the new Berger 230 hybrid (BC>0.7) at some unbelievable speed.
Barrel life won't be good but it won't manner since the recoil and blast will have you at the dentist to repair your loose teeth most of the time.
Seriously, the biggest hurdle will be the expense of the rifle all the specialized reloading gear.

The 30 lapua is now on my list of things to read up on. I was poking around and talking to a couple folks and with the 7.21 firebird I may be able to get a 175XLD to move in the 3450fps range. That makes me wanna stay in the .284 world and leave the 30's alone. Still have so many idea's!!!

As you move up in caliber you can shoot bigger bullets at higher BC's. The price is recoil, lots of it. I have gone as high as the big .338's but always in hunting rifles where shooting is limited and you don't notice the recoil. Also, you don't need as fast a twist in a big 30 as a 7mm.Be sure you can get good brass and reloading equipment for your choice, no matter what it is, and get a long barrel. I have a .257Wby. with a 28" Krieger and it is not that unwieldy since it is used from a stand or in open country.
Doing the research and making your choice is the enjoyable part.

You might want to look at the boltface required for some of these cases you are considering. If you already have an action, it may or may not be suitable for some of the big caseheads such as the 338 Lapua case.

I am not 100% but since I am building off of a savage 110 action I should be able to just swap the bolt head to except the larger case. I am not sure though so if anyone knows let me know.

Just for kicks, take a look at the 30 Hart, by Bobby Hart in Nescopeck, if you want to hunt 1000yd deer/elk, then consider ti, based on the 300wby

This is a question best answered perhaps on the Savage forum. Fred of Sharp Shooter Supply posts regularly and Jim from Northland is accessible also.
Its good your building on a Savage action because if you plan on shooting it much you will be screwing on another in a short round count! ;D
