308 Vs 6,5x55, 300 yards.

I am wondering, is there any bullet fired through a 308 Win, that can compete with a 6,5x55 shooting

144 Sierra at 2600fps
140 Sierra at 2650fps
123 Sierra at 2800fps

with a max range of 300yards?

I have a 308 with a 27" barrel.

I can only speak directly to the Berger 185LRBT Juggernaut but I was able to get them going 2600 fps+ with a 26 inch barrel. They have a higher BC than any of the 6.5 bullets you mention and at those speeds, the 185 should shoot inside the 6.5 s and punch a bigger hole which matters a lot in 300 yard score shooting. My throat is long enough to seat the 185s out in the neck. They shoot fine in a 1:12 twist. It would be a different story with a 6.5X55 Improved where the heavies can get to over 2900 fps even in a short barrel and into the 2950 range with a longer barrel.

Berger 155.5 FB- 2995 fps
Sierra 155 (2156)- 2996 fps
I have a 30" 1:12 twist barrel.

yes....but the 6.5 swede was miles ahead of the competition for years.
and your numbers are low...
using 4350 and a 27" as your 308, a 139 lapua does 2800 fps....not the 2650 you list for a 140.

and in a 308 win a siera 135 mk will do almost 3000 fps from 27" with n140...probably more.
and a 155 mk will do 2900......................

My first question is: compete how? Group size? Scoring? Are you asking for a ballistic comparison? Next would be why the Swede is being handicapped with low velocity? If the rifle is a modern action, with a reasonably decent length barrel launching the 140 class bullets at 2800+ is very easy.

Doing a comparison of cases:
308 case capacity 56gr H2O
6.5x55 case capacity 57.9gr H2O

Sierra bullet BC's:
123gr Matchking 0.510
140gr Matchking 0.495
142gr Matchking 0.595
There is no 144 from Sierra

I do not load 308's so I am not familiar with the bullet choices beyond 175gr Matchkings, but I did look up the BC an earlier poster mentioned, the Berger 185 and it has a BC of 0.560. Close to the 142, but I'd have to wonder if the smaller case can drive the heavy bullet as fast as the 142 can be launched from the Swede.

Compete how? BC is not a factor at 300 yards

A 308 will compete with anything on the planet as long as the shooter turns the knobs. My 185 running 2830-2850 is super competitive .good shooting to you

Exactly! In equivalent rifles with modern state of the art bullets and using the MVs the pair are capable of in a modern action with good brass, there shouldn't be anything between them at all at this distance as they're both inherently accurate designs.

The 6.5 will produce less recoil though with a 140 than a 308 with say the 185gn Juggernaut for the same weight rifle, so the average competitor may be able to shoot it more consistently over a greater number of shots, especially off the bench. (But then again, the 6mm BR and Dasher produce even less recoil and are proven match winners in 300 to 600yd BR!)
