308 twist for 155 to 168gr bullets

I do not have much experiance with the 308 as i shoot the smaller calibers for varmint hunting. I am looking to build a 308 to shoot mainly the 155 to 168gr bullets but will more than likely use the 155,s to hunt with. I am ordering a proof Research CF barrel in the sendero contour and will be 20 inches long. Building something light and easy to tote around. I called and they will do another twist besides the 10 twist for me. Would a 11 1/4 twist be fine for the 155,s or would you bump it up to a 12 twist?

I run Berger 185 Juggernauts in my 1-11 twist. If I was having a barrel chambered for 155 - 168 gr. bullets I would go with the 12 twist.

If you're gonna have it throated for the 155's I'd get a 12-13 twist.

12 will work. On the other hand, if you ever want to shoot anything that requires a faster twist, you'll be limited. An 11.25 twist will also work just fine and give you a wider range of bullet choices. I shoot 168s out of a 10-twist barrel...it's definitely more twist than is necessary, but it shoots them very well. 11.25 is a good all-around twist rate for anything from 155s to 190s.

I shoot 175s through my 12 twist great. I may run some 155s but nothing heavier

My 10 twist did not like 155s at all. It settled in with 175s.. so my votes goes to the 11.25 or 12 for what you want.

I have an 18.5" 1:1twist AR that handles 155s very well and 3 brands of 175 like a bench gun. Ive not trie anything heavier and probably won't have to.

I've shot 155-185 gain bullets through 11 twist barrels and had good success. a 11 twist should work

I have a R700 with a 26" 1-12" and the best performer is hands down 168's , also does excellent with the 155's. I've tried 175's+ and it shot them "ok" but nothing compared to the lighter bullets.

Dan do you hunt when it's cold?

Most 155's will work fine in 1:13 twist while the longer ones like Berger's 155 Hybrid prefer 1:12 or maybe 1:11. Colder temps tend to need faster twists so with that 20" barrel your velocities will be lower where a faster twist will be helpful when it's chilly. I don't think 1:10 is a good idea though, 1:11 or 1:11.25 ought to work great with 155 - 168.
