308 to 300 WSM

Thinking about getting a new barrel to change a 308 to 300 WSM on a Rem SA. Other than opening up the bolt face,,follower, and magazine box, what else would need to be done for this conversion? Or are the actions totally different. Thanks for any help,Mike

If the barrel you have in 308 is a good one why not just set it back, rechamber open up the bolt face and go. It would be more much more economical.

Well reason I asked was a local gunsmith told me it couldn't be done. Said there was a difference between a regular SA and a SA for the SAUM and WSM cartridges.Mike

Get another bolt made with the magnum bolt face.

I have a Model 7 Stainless Synthetic Magnum in .300 SAUM..looking at the action it seems to be the same as any other Model 7...the bolt face is much wider as far as the opening goes but it's the same diameter..someone I thing is buffaloing you..there is no difference in the two that I'm holding.....WHY don't you just trade in the .308 for a .300 Saum..by the way, get yourself the slip on Simms Vibration Labs recoil pad..you'll need it!!!

When you open the boltface on a Remington you must also address the extractor issue. Either you recut the bolt to accept a magnum Remington extractor or go the a Sako style extractor. Few 'smiths have the ability to do the first option and the second is expensive and many feel violates the "three rings of steel" safety feature of the Remingtons.
Other options are a new bolt from Dave Kiff or swap guns.

there is also tweaks to the rails to get it to feed. I just went and bought a Rem SPS in 300 WSM,$435)., sold the barrel,$75) and stock,$20) and kept the action, trigger and guard.

You will definitely need to open up the feed rails as they are different than the standard short actions, even the belted mag action rails will need this done to cycle correctly. Actually if you don't do this they will NOT cycle because they will not go into the magazine well..........
