.308 resizing and 2 rifles

Once I retire in November I plan on shooting more. I have a .308 M1 Garand and a 40X I'm having blue printed. Now I have a lot of brass shot out of both thats mixed together. I can pretty much tell which was shot out of which gun by the amount of stretch I can measure with a RCBS case mic. To keep things simple I wanted to size all brass to 00 on the RCBS case mic which should be about 1.6300-1.6400 (according to instructions). If I do this then my M1 brass will stretch about .005 and my 40X about .002 (before blueprinting and maybe stay the same afterwards) I guess my question is, is bumping back .005 on the M1 too much or should I just have separate brass for each gun?

IMHO, keep it separated! I would run a different headstamp in the 40X(Lapua comes to mind) for maximum case life and accuracy. The stretching between the two will be very hard on the cases.

I, too, would keep the brass for each rifle separate from the other. The 40X brass will last much longer than the Garand brass and benefit from minimal sizing in both accuracy and brass life. All you need is to set your sizing die for the Garand (complete full length) and determine the minimum sizing needs for your bolt gun using die shims from Sinclair. You never have to change the collar on the die, just install the shim under the die when sizing the bolt guns brass. I am betting that a shim in the .004" area would work but you will find out. They come in sets and are not expensive.

get one of pbmikes sizer rings for your brass and then dedicate it to the 40X that ring sizer of his is a life saver

.005 Sizing back will result in some pretty short brass life.

Keep all the brass you have currently and use it in the garand. Since you are blueprinting the 40x i am assuming your getting a new barrel or rechambering the old one because the headspace and threads will be off. Might as well run Lapua through the new tube.

Different rifles = different brass. I use Lake City, Winchester, etc. for the semi-autos like the M1 and the AR, and Lapua for the bolt guns.

I agree. Keep the brass separate for each rifle. I run LC in my AR and Lapua in my bolt rifles.
