.308 Remington 700 VLS

I am looking at a used .308 VLS ($575), but I don't know much about this model. Does anyone have any experience with these? Do they shoot well? Any typical problems? I'd appreciate whatever you can share.

The only difference from any other Rem. 700 .308 Varmint rifle is the stock, it's a thumbhole laminate....that's what the VLS is for: Varmint Laminated Stock.

Of the ones I've seen they seem to do there part with most High End Match ammo, and with some tweeking can and do shoot .5 moa, mine in .243 Win.
has never let me down.

I second the quality of the VLS. I also have one chambered in 243, she's a tack driver. However, I did pillar bed mine with Devcon.

The only draw back of the 308 cal is the recoil which can account for some pilot error from time to time . T.R.

Thanks for the feedback. I bought the rifle today. Once the range clears 4 feet of snow I'll be able to see if it shoots.

Thanks.

I did three things that really helped my factory .308 VLS, 1- changed stocks to H&S Precision for the better bedding, 2 - changed firing pin and spring and 3 - added a Jewell 2 oz trigger. It is capable of 1/2 inch groups with 165 BIB flat base bullets and either Varget or 4064. The Lapua .308 brass is excellent and you can do all this without being a Gunsmith. Enjoy - George

My dad's can shoot 3/8in 100 yard groups of 5 in .22-250. He has the pre X Mark Pro trigger model.

Still have to bed the rifle and do a trigger job for best results.

VLS should do 1/2MOA or better with handloads.
