.308 Reduced Load Accuracy

It all depends on how accurate your rifle is. The 125 Nosler ballistic tip is flat out accurate in everything I have shot it in. I shoot it with 46 grs IMR 4895 in my 308 Win rifle and it does right at 3000 fps from the 21 1/2" Heart barrel. It is bug hole accurate and kills deer like lightening struck them. Keep your impact velocity under 3000 fps and it works great on deer. I shoot it at 2850 fps in my 30x47 rifle and at 2670 fps out of my 14" barrel 30-30AI Contender pistol for deer and it bang flops them.

A few years ago I helped a new shooter with a 308 . I used the 125 ballistic tip with IMR 4198 . I don't remember for sure the amount of powder I used . the powder range is min 25.0 - max 29.0 data from speer #13 . it had very mild recoil . she could shoot about 10 or 15 shots before it started to wear on her . it was plenty accurate enough to hunt deer out to 100 yards with .

50yards

100 yards . I made a scope adjustment between the groups .

100 yards . this was a used target the club had laying around . she put three good hits on it . one hole is on the black line just below the other two .

100 yards . her last target of the day . I think she was wearing out .

If you goggle "Hodgdon Youth Loads" you get a series of recommended reduced recoil loads for H4895. I started my son out with the cookbook 308W loads using 125 gr Noslers Hunting BT and 38.0 gr of H4895. They were right at 1" groups at 100 yards in his Savage 308w factory sporter barrel. Never even tried to optimize. It was more than good enough. Very light recoil. Was effective on whitetails.

Luck, Tim

My notes show 110 Vmax @ 3280 out of a 26" barrel making sub 1" groups at 200 yards. I use Benchmark for that one.

The felt recoil was substantially less than 168 grain loads at 2600. I never tried any lower because recoil was not the design issue.

BTW, it does tear up ground squirrels.

47 g of varget and 110 vmax or several of the 125's and my wife is deadly. She has a bum shoulder and she can shoot these all day

I have also gotten excellent accuracy with H4895 and 125Nosler BTs. These reduced loads also work magic in a 30-06 and 300WM. The WM will do close to 1/2" at 100 yds.

Just worked a load up a few weeks ago in a 20" youth model gun. Ended up at 42.5 grains of H4895 with a 125 B-tip at 2775. I pm'd a fella on here that is good with quick loads and asked him about optimal barrel time. He told me the center of the biggest node should be at 2775 and I'll be darned if it wasn't. Started at 41.5 up to 44.5.
