308 Question

Sorry Jon, but that's definitely a PM kinda question. Let's just say the explanation of how Dillon's FL-2000 got its name would violate decorum on a family-friendly board. Funny story, though.

Sorry Kevin,

I am going to try some 185 Scenar's as well before I stock up on bullets! This is the only bullet I haven't tried, and since I have three other rifles that love Scenar's, well I will have to try them on the new build as well!

Curiously, other than on the cartridge-specific reloading data page for Win 308, Lapua doesn't include recommended twist rates for their bullets on their website's product pages: http://www.lapua.com/en/products/reloading/bullets/centerfire-rifle-bullets/8

Load data for Win 308 indicates 1:12 for all bullets (theirs and some other brands) listed.

Brian Litz suggests 1:12 though if "conditions" are less than ideal (cold, at or near sea-level) 1:11 offers greater margin for safety. You might be able to use a 1:13 too but only if conditions are near-perfect for them: warm, thin air.

When in doubt, faster is generally believed to be more of a practical choice than slower... within reason.

Liltank,

As Steve suggested, I'd go with a 1x11" as my own ideal. Bryan says a 1x12" shouold work, and I suspect it probably would be just fine (perfectly willing to take Bryan's word for it here). I like that little extra safety margin, though. Remember, Murphy, shooting matches . . . they go together.

Going back to those 175 SMKs..... we've got them to shoot pretty decent at 1000 yards out of a 16" bbl LMT MWS gas gun!!

Our .308s are 20 inchers and just keep the bullets super to 1000... I've got to think that the 16" with a gas port in the barrel is going transonic before it hits the target. (we didn't create a chart on that gun... just tried it one day.)
