308 NEW build, thinking of a tight neck barrel

Getting ready to order my barrel.

Questions:

First it will be a 308, 10 twist, target heavy barrel. I will be mainly shooting it 600 yds! It stays pretty windy in the Louiaiana Sugar Cane Fields, so I will be using 175gr or 190grns!

How effective would a tight neck be on this 308?

No problem turning brass, I have a tight neck 6x47L and 22-250

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

308 NEW build, thinking of a tight neck barrle

I prefer 1 in 11 twist barrels in 308W & 300 win mag... that twist will still shoot 210 gr VLDs very accurately

Standard neck size or make it a tight neck?

That to me is personal choice if you like turning necks and think there is something to gain go for it. i neck turn for 75 % clean up on both.
Nether of my 308W or 300 win mag bench guns are tight neck. and they are very accurate in the .2 when im focussed.

I'v tried both methods, I always turn the necks to insure that they are concentric, the lurking problem is if you happen to load in a standard neck round you could possibly blow up the gun. Must be very cautious with your loads if you build a tight neck. For what it's worth it doesn't usually make any difference in group size until you get below 1/4 inch groups.

DH,

In my experience the twist should be 1:12" and a minimum 30" long.
My associate was contacted by instructors at Camp Pendleton for a long bbl 308 for testing. They had a class of snipers that need to re-shoot to qualify. I had a 33" x30 cal x 1:12 twist bbl .900 at muzzle, that I was going to use for 300 Weatherby varmint rifle, I chambered it to 308 it finished at 32.5" (figuring to re-chamber it for the weatherby later)did not have time to work up loads, expecting slower powders would be needed to utilize the extra length.

I/we packed our LLR Swap bbl with four bbls and three bolts, 223,308, 300 Win mag, 338 Lapua and headed down to San Diego.

The 308 was checked for zero and went through the course first shooting GI sniper ammo. The instructor calculated using scope data(dope) that the long barrel was 93" flatter trajectory than thier 24" bbls. I/we were impressed to say the least.

Several students shot better scores with our rifle.
