308 load suggestions

Hey all, just bought Rock River AR10 308 heavy barrel. Going to hunt deer mostly shots 400yds or less. I am looking for favorite loads. I have looked through forum and found great advice, but needs specific. Looking to shoot 150-165 gr bullets. BW it is a 1-10 twist. Thanks in advance!

Try some Sierra Gameking's. 150-165 gr Bullets. H4895,IMR4895,IMR 4064,Varget,760 powder. CCI primers. Sending pm also.

165 Gameking or Hornady BTSP with 41.5 H-4895.

If you prefer ball powder, use 42.5 gr of w-748.

These loads work good in all my 308win's... I developed these loads for gas guns and can interchange 168 gr bullets with the 165's as well.

168gr Sierra Matchking , 42gr of imr-4064... This load flys nice in my 24inch bolt gun SO substitute the Matchking for a Gameking would be a good start.... Remember you don't want to load the AR as hot as a bolt gun... Really the only way to tell is to load up a few and give it a try...

Another vote for SGKs. For ease of developing a load the 165SGK shoots pretty much identical to the 168SMK. There are two 165 SGKs, a hollow point and a spire point. If you go that route get the spire points. The hollow point has a heavy jacket and is designed for magnum velocities.

The 150 Pro hunter is a great choice too.

Pick a powder, there are so many that work for 308 hunting loads.

I have had good results with IMR3031 with 165 grain Nosler ballistic tip with CCI primers.

Don’t overlook the Nosler 165 gr Ballistic Tip. They’ve shot well in almost any rifle tried. Try 42.0-42.5 IMR4064 in Winchester or Federal brass.

And there’s also the Barnes TTSx 150 grain. If your rifle likes it it is an excellent game bullet. Just keep the powder in the 3031-4320 speed range. Varget and RL15 are excellent choices.

I'm a benchrest shooter with a bolt action . A very accurate load at 200 yards is IMR4064 under a 168 gr Sierra MK , Sierra MK's aren't recommend for hunting but The Hornady A-Max168 is . Other powders RL-15 & Varget shooting at 400 yards max. with a 1/10 twist you could also go heavier . What range did you zero at and how are your 5 shot groups.

Buy some federal huntin Ammo

Remington R25 .308 here.
It likes 165gr. Sierra Gameking SPBT, with 41.7 gr. IMR 4895 and WLR primers in IMI match grade brass. Getting 2,568 fps with a 20" barrel. 5 shots in one ragged hole at 100 yds.

May want to try a 150 grain Nosler ballistic tip with 42.0 grains of RL 15. Got 2700 fps with a Sako bolt action, consistent sub 0.5 moa. Worked really well on a large doe antelope yesterday at 275 yards in Wyoming.

Varget is a slower burning powder than 4895.
