308 Ladder test questions

This ladder was done at 300 yards. 44.5 appears to be a scatter node and my best accuracy will fall in between 44.8 and 45.4. Thinking about loading 5 rounds each at 44.8, 45.0. 45.2, and 45.4 shooting them at 300 and going with the one that groups the best and has the leas amount of verticle. What say you?

Jpbmidas, I think I've seen you post on msgunowners?? I'm trying to get a load worked up to shoot at bogue chitto and palo alto. Think I need 2" groups at 600 to compete with some of those fellas.

That's me. You don't need 2" groups at 600, but you for sure need to be under 6"! In F-T/r its a little easier, but not much! Wind reading is where I struggle! The 22RF F-Class we shoot is great practice for that. Have you tried the .22's?

I was wondering if there were many other Mississippians on here.

  • Looks like your node is going to be at 44.2 or less. As you can see, from what appears to be the node at 44.8-45.1, it is below the lighter charge of 44.2 grains. This is indicator that you are already at pressure. Then after that it started to shoot like a shotgun. What my reconmendation is go back to 44.0 grains and load up in one tenth inciments to 44.7 grains and shoot the ladder again, I have the feeling you may find the node for you bullet barrel combo.

There was a 4" jump in verticle from 43.9 to 44.2. The reason you can't see shot's below 43.9 is because they started too low to get all shots on camera. Their did seem to be a node at 43.0-43.6 however velocity was slow. Velocity increased at a steady rate until I reached 45.7(which is what I consider to be max load) even though cases showed no pressure signs and I had 0 case head expansion. It was my understanding that the purpose of a ladder test was to show a window in powder charge that has very little verticle dispersion at long distance which would rule out shots below 44.2.
