.308 FTR

I'm thinking about having a .308 built with a 30",or 31") barrel, throated for the 210s. Powder suggestions and what kind of speed should I expect? What kind of stock are people using with 30" barrels to get under the weight restriction? Thanks.

I have been building 308s with 95 Palma chambers throated for 210 Bergers for over a year now. My customers are shooting 45-46.5 grains of VV 550. We have been shooting either Broughton 5C 1:10 or Krieger tightbore,.298) barrels. From 30-32 inches in length. My shooters are finding best results between 2600 and 2650fps. Brass doesn't last shot any hotter than this. About 5 inches of vertical is the norm. 36 minutes of elevation at 1000. The .636 BC of the 210 makes it very good in the wind. Now you have been given for free the advice of about $10,000 worth of experimentation.

Rustystud,

What's the minimum twist your customers have ran that bullet thru and had it still work?

Thanks,

Monte

These boys down here are using 47gr of Varget behind the 210 Berger and getting 2710 FPS out of a 32" Broughton 10 twist. I can't say it's a safe load, but I have witnessed it's abilities. They are throating them out .1 long over the Palma 95 Match reamer... barely got any bullet in the case and using the rifling to seat the bullets upon bolt close. Reloads on the brass does not seem to be a problem. Our 1k range seems to be a prooving grounds for high horse power loads. One of them just won the Nat'l Long Range High Power title.

Wow. That's a wee bit stout, to say the least.

Guess I'll get to watch 'em first hand down @ Raton.

Thanks,

Monte

They won't be shooting those rifles at anything other than an F-Class event or Highpower match. Don't know if these guys travel to Raton but they will be shooting the Canadian Palma match very soon.

They won't be shooting many heavy bullet loads in Canada either. Fullbore and F,F),Canadian equivalent of long range prone and F-T/R) limit bullet weights for .308 Winchester to less than 156 grains.

That's something I'm kind of mulling over right now... I can probably run a 175 or 190gr pretty easily out of the 30" 1-12 twist barrel on the gun right now, might be able to spin up a 210, or might not). I shot my first Canadian match a couple weekends ago, and luckily, sure wasn't by plan) I was running Berger 155gr VLDs. It was a hoot, and I intend to pencil it in for years to come, but it poses a dilemma: do I run 155s all year round or use the heavy bullets for all the U.S. matches *except* the Canadian one.

As an added dimension to the argument... assuming ICFRA endorses F/TR for the upcoming World F-Class championships... I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they'll probably *not* be allowing loads like the ones mentioned above, that are about half a click from melting the dilithium crystals in the warp drive ;) There again, running 155s from the get-go might not be a bad idea vs. having to switch back down for team tryouts or international matches.

Interesting debate, and one that I'm sure can be argued til the cows come home ;)

In Canada they,John) will be shooting a 155 Sierra Palma bullet with 47gr of Varget and a russian primer in a Lapua case. He'll be shooting in that little match they are having in Ottawa, you know, the Palma Trophy Match. It is coinciding with the Canadian version of our "Camp Perry".
