.308 Elk bullets

Thanks to all my friends and their recommendations; yes, Nosler seems to cover the potent hunting stuff extremely well. Among AccuBond, Partition, and Ballistic Tip fare, nothing seems missing for the handloader via Nosler. Whether 150 or 165 grain or 180 grain fare is the best for Elk, I'd think the range would govern the best bullet. Thick woods should automatically select the 180 grain bullet at short range, whilst 150 grainers should cover open range swiftly. The 165 grain bullet should cover every circumstance betwixt. For me it has always been hard to predict the range my oppertunity would be at. This is the reason I don't shoot the Gameking bullet anymore. They are great bullets and very accurate. How ever If you are pushing them very fast, at short ranges the bullet either will make big mess of your meat. It may not even pass complety through. My expereince has been that most of the time the Gameking does pass through at 100yrd, but not always. It does a good job at putting game down. However I just like a bullet that retains weight and pushes all the way through the animal as far as big game goes. Bounded bullets do just that. Nosler partition bullet is a favorite of mine. Recent years has me using the Accubond more now days than the partition bullet. They are just more accuarte than the partition.

I would try to look at things like this when planning a hunt. What is the futherest shot do I think I will have. If it's going to be 0 to 300yrds. I would go with the good ole Nosler Partiton. Plenty accurate out to that range. Pass that I start losing my confidents in the bullet. As far as accuracy. I'm not saying it want shoot well past 300yrds It just hasn't done as well for me as the Accubond has. Like I said above the Gamking bullets are good bullets. I have just found better results out of Nosler's partition and Accubond bullets. I would be confident that the Accubond will give you everything you need for elk at short range as well long ranges. Weather you take a shot at 100yrds or 600yrds. The Accubond will have you covered. With the 300WM. you will have plenty of energy to take down a elk at 600yrd using the 180gr. accubond.
Good luck to you, on your hunt!

all the above will do a great job, and i vote you try the northfork's 165 , 180, and 200gr in your 300wm. they sell the 180 and 200 in 20pc sample packs which is very convenient in developing working loads--cam

What I like about the 300 WM is the bullet doesn't seem to matter that much. It freaking hits like a sledge hammer no matter what you load it with. With that said I would find a bullet for elk and a different, perhaps lighter bullet for deer. I've seen small bucks turned inside out by people shooting a 300 WM at close distances.

Another good bullet that is inexpensive and performs as good as the Gamekings is the Hornady Interlock. Wby has done tests and this bullet stays together about as good as the Partition and Accubond bullets. These bullets are not glamours and don't come with the marketing treatment intended to bag hunters, but they are work horse bullets, and countless animals have been killed over the years with them.
I just bought an eight year old Rem700, 7RM . First day at the range after a 2 shot zero, the Hornady 154gr interlock shot 3 covered by a dime. Needless to say I was impressed. It's great to know there is a great backup factory load out there.

I have seem some deer shot with bullets that were tougher than is ideal for deer that resulted in slow kills so that would be a concern of mine for what you want. You need a bullet that is tough enough for elk but violent enough for deer, plan a: nosler partition in 165 or 180 should do bolth quite nicely and effectively even though the bc is not ideal for 5-600 yds. Plan b is 165 or 180 grain hornady ssts for deer and the same weight interbonds for elk. Interbonds are bonded and tougher, but the exact same shape as ssts in calibers i have tried them in, but i have not used these exact bullets in 30 cal

I load Barnes TSX for my brother in law in his .308. I believe they are 160 gr maybe 150. He has killed multiple elk. He hunts the dark timber and most shots are under 100 yds. They have been all 1 shot kills most going down in under 50 yds We have shot groups out to 400 yds does better than 1 moa. Not bad for a Ruger American.

I like those also , even after 11 years I still responded to the thread.
Good Grief..

If shots were limited to 400 yards, it would be tough to beat the Speer grand slams. If you are set on taking shots past that go Berger, but know that the closer shots will probably see only 18-24" of penetration. So an exit will probably not happen on mature bull elk.
