.308 and 185 Bergers LRBT's , PALMA SHOOTERS.

What velocity are you guys getting that are shooting a 30 inch Palma tube , chambered long , for the 185 Bergers. Particularly the LRBT.

Just like to get an idea so I can run som comparison numbers.

Thanks.

I'm shooting out of a 30" tube but shooting F class. The MVs don't care if its on a bipod on a sling.

Obviously it's dependent on how hard you push them, how long your throat is cut and a few other things but you should be able to get into the low to mid 2700s w/o abusing your brass using Varget. Figure 2725 to as high as 2775 or more if you are willing to shorten your brass life. The load will probably be in the 43.8 to 44.5 range in WW brass, again depending on how far out you can seat them. (44.5 is getting into the abusive of brass range) Do an OCW workup and you should find a node that is in the neighborhood of 44 grains. Load in the middle of it. (if you are using Lapua the number will be a little lower from the lower volume of the Lapua)

From what I hear most folks jump 'em 0.010 to 0.015.

Edited the low end of the load range. I don't know where that 30 something number came from

One other thing, as has been stated many times in the past, Varget does vary batch to batch. I'm finding that the latest jug I've opened is running 0.3 to 0.4 hotter than the last one so if you are loading to the top of the range be careful when/if you open a new jug.

I shoot the Hybrid, not the LRBT. My barrel is also 28". My Mv is 2660 using 43.0 Varget. The bullet was jumped .010, but I have a little over 500 rounds on the barrel so it's probably a little more now.

24 inch Bartlein 43.3 grains of Varget gives me 2610 fps. in Lapua brass, CCI 250, seated to max mag length.

What brass? And how is the brass life? Mind sharing some load data?

Thanks

~ 2775 fps, with a 30", 11-twist Brux

Great! I assume those are naked Bergers ? Have you seen any thing that makes you like the small primer vs the large?

IMHO, the main benefit of using the Palma brass is that the primer pockets hold up a lot better. On target, I've found the differences between the standard brass and the Palma brass to be insignificant.

I may have to try some of that small pocket brass for my TR loads.

The brother's that won the Canadian Nationals run their naked 185 BTs at 2830 in Bat actions. Destroys the brass but their results are pretty impressive.

Wow, that's quick. Wonder how heavy their guns are. Are you talking sling shooters?

That would indeed be the Chou brothers. Their rifles have very long throats, so the bullets are seated way out to maximize powder capacity. They are using standard .308 Lapua brass, not the palma variety.

Copy, is there a go to powder for the Palma shooters that are using the 185 Bergers and long tubes?, for example with the 6xc it's H4350 for the 107 and 115 class bullets.

Is it varget, H4895, 4064,

Just trying to see what is most popular, if there is a consensus at all.

Thanks

Varget seems to be the most popular over all.

At least one very good shooter I know of has been using N-150 with great results (very similar burn rate to Varget in my experience).

I've tried 2000MR with promising results thus far.

But Varget tends to be the one most of the shooters I know are using.

I am running a 33.25", 1:12, 5R, with 46.0 gr Varget and getting 2800- 2820 FPS with Berger 185 BT.

I run the Berger 200 Hybreds in a 32.25", 1:10, 5R, with 44.4 grains of Varget. They are running about 2600-2650 (different barrels).

I shoot a 6BRX with 32.25", 1:8 5R, with 32.4 gr Varget 3020-3280 (different barrels) Berger 105s.

Nate thanks for the post,

Any issues out to 1000 with th 1-12 twist and the 185 Bergers?

If it matters, I shoot a 27" Brux barrel .298-.308 / 1:10 with Lapua brass, 41grs of H4895 & Berger 185's (.040 jump) to 2643 avg fps out of an AR-10 (Armalite). I can get 2700 fps but loose brass quickly right off the bat with the higher load. I have 12-15 loadings on Lapua brass so far with the lighter load, I loose about 7 every match right now, but take in consideration how many times they have been loaded.

Yep it's Wil and Kevin Chou. I believe their guns are actually throated for 210-215 bergers but they run the 185s seated way out to get that speed..

A friend of mine uses Alliant Power Pro 2000 and gets over 2800fps with Berger 185's in Lapua brass with no pressure signs. Primer pockets still tight, too.
