308 AI

Has anyone ever tried the 308 Ackey Improved in F class? I know that there is a little case capacity to be had but, it's seems to me that brass life might be better. It wouldn't be Ackey but I've always like the 30 degree shoulder cases. any one tried that?

You could only shoot it in F-Open. It would be interesting to see what could be done with some of the high BC Palma bullets in a long heavy barrel.

This is a project I tried last year:

How do you do that? Just put a .308 pilot on a match reamer in .243 win and push it inside a .308 win chamber about .15" deeper. Next, neck up any .308 case to .338 and resize the neck in a .308 Win die with that same .15" gap between the shell holder and the die base, in order to create a false shoulder et voila! And the icing on the cake is that you keep your regular .308 dies and don't need no fancy Ackley reamer or dies.

You could also run a 300 Savage in that much deeper and get a 30 deg shoulder and about the same neck lenght. There is only a few thou differance in the shoulder dia.

Unfortunately, you can't fully clear a .308 W shoulder with a .300 S reamer pushed just .15" further. You'll end up with a belt on the shoulder ???

I believe the .308 Davis improved offers more capacity and might clean up a .308 chamber. I think it should clean up a 308 chamber. The Davis uses a 45degree shoulder and holds 80grs of water vs the 308's 78grs.

How many necks you crack making that 45 deg shoulder?

Have a 308AI 40deg shoulder that is a bit longer than standard .308 AI.
Kind of like a Gibbs AI w/more neck. 22" match barrel on a Rem 700.

Thinking of having re threaded for Win 70 and parting off the chamber recess the 700 bolt nose sits in so would have another bite at the OAL chamber apple...

I like the chamber and dimension on the fired brass very much. No cracked brass yet firing factory ammo. Likely would be perfect with longer 200gr SMK or VLD bullets. Neck length is .27 IIRC so pretty decent. Used a .30-06 AI reamer to improve my chamber. Brass looks beautiful and smooth on shoulder. Figure to part-off the correct body stock from an 06AI FL die to make what I want for sizing. Prefer Redding type S FL bushing dies... Easier to alter a seater, as they aren't case-hardened. Why the Sizer dies are hardened, I'm not sure. Seems overkill since just forming brass a very minimal dimensional change. Have heated Redding dies to alleviate the hardening before, die changes to a nice blue tint and is easy to work on.
