I shot one in a hunting rifle for years and there is very little gain when you run the same pressure in the standard and improved versions. There was about a 50fps gain at muzzle. Use the standard version and add about 2" barrel length.

I built one 20 years ago and found that there was no real gain in velocity over the standard case.
There is not much taper in the parent case, so blowing it out doesn't provide any significant gain in powder capacity. The only gain is that the Improved shoulder impedes case length growth.
The 30-06 would be a better choice, if you have a long action.

Your numbers are dead on with a 168 gr bullet and Varget with 28'' barrel. The case difference is 3 gr of H20. But also 50 FPS at one 1000 is a big gain. Larry

Likely to be shooting 180gr plus weight bullets? Then the .308AI will perform.

The .30/284 would be a better choice though, same capacity as the .30-06, already has 35deg shoulder can be run in a short-action, or some SA receivers anyway.

Building from ground up? .300saum is another option, then there is the .30-338 which is a bit more opportunity open to you, but can be loaded to 06 levels. Setup to headspace on the shoulder and you are very versatile.

Best ticket for a SA project w/o bolt work though is the .30/284. Can use the Redding S .284win die for sizing w/bushing of your choice. Get a Forster .284win Ultra Seater and a .30cal seating rod and open up the die to take the .30cal seating rod. or buy a custom die set and spare no expense...
