300yd f class match with a 338lm

we have a informal class when we shoot our 300 yd matches and there is one person who brings a 338LM his score are not good . now for the question could it be that the round is not stablizing that close i dont own one but i'm trying to help him out . he is shooting a 285gr head would a lighter bullet maybe work i know one problem he has is no spotter to call his shots.

I will give you a whole host of possibilities!..
1.) The bullet has not or just barely has completely stabilized..
2.) The recoil during load development prevented him from actually developing excellent loads
3.) The recoil during competition has him so fatigued that it becomes more labor than competition >> OR
4.) He is actually a little afraid of the rifle and flinches during extended firing strings..
Not knowing the fellow I am only guessing, based mainly on the cartridge..

I have and shoot a 338LM ocassional and shoot a 7mm Shehane in F Class...the 338 is accurate for F-Class and a good load will shoot five shots in .4" at 100 yards...but the recoil will kill scores no matter who shoots it...Either he has a piss poor rifle or flinching...Scope could be a problem aslo if it is cheap.

The bullet is or is not stabilized. Your friend is his own worst enemy for the reasons others have stated.

I believe the shooter is flinching and may have other issues as well. I have never believed the "bullet hasn't stabilized yet or the bullet hasn't gone to sleep" story, ever. If a round doesn't shoot well at 100 or 300 yards, it has no chance to shoot better farther away. Stories of a bullet going to sleep are just that, stories. Look at Erik Cortina's post about load development at 100 yards. I start at 100 and verify out to 600 yards because I can. If a load doesn't shopw promise at 100, it won't farther out.

That thing is a monster and tough to put a handle on up close. Yes, a low node would be the path to get it under control up close. Now listen to this, .. Learn how to handle the recoil for far, then bring it in.
