300WSM or 300PRC

So I have been strongly thinking about putting together a 300wsm for 1k yd F class. But now Im hearing about the 300PRC and its Mil contract. Wondering if that might make brass and dies and such cheap and plentiful.
What real world difference might either choice make.

That I doubt will happen.


A 300 WSM is about the "real world" limit for "F-Open" for most shooters & even too much for some. - And who's to say that the 300 PRC would be as accurate in F-Class ? - Right now brass choice is very limited, and I don't claim to know a whole lot about Hornady 300 PRC brass but there is a few threads/posts already by some pretty experienced guys who've used it.
- I would think that shooting a 300 PRC in F-Class competition would probably be a "hand full" & more.
- Bigger isn't always better (for accuracy & competition), and that coming from a guy who shoots some pretty large caliber rifles.
 
I don't know anything about a 300 PRC, but know a 300 WSM is very accurate. It wins all the time in 1000 yard benchrest and has sat a bunch of records. It is usually very easy to tune and stays there for the year.

I know Shariz won a bunch of big F-Class matches with one also. The problem is like Ron says, 20 shot strings can wear on you. The recoil is fairly stout and alot of guys can't handle one. Matt
 
Myself and the Hornady guys have been shooting the PRC under a different name for a lot of years. I have reamers dated 2007. My Hvy gun is chambered in it. Two years ago at the IBS Nationals I tied for first in score and I think I was fifth in group. That having not shot a match in a year. Good accurate round when built correctly.
For F class I'd go WSM. You don't need the capacity of the PRC.
 
What is the real world brass life of the 300 WSM? I’m thinking about doing one for those moments I feel young and recoil tolerant.:)

Like any cartridge brass life is dependent on how hard it gets pushed to by us handloader's. - If one chooses to run the "higher node" then there can be a cost for doing so. - The 1000 yard BR shooters that I've talked to have reported very good brass life from the Norma brand brass. They are running an accuracy node with 210 gr. bullets that's probably yielding around 2810 to 2850 fps and the reported life of their brass is very good. - I have been running the 300 WSM chambering for about 3 years now in 3 different rifles, 2 of them being competition (1000 yard BR) type guns. In my rifles, I know that if I choose the "higher node" my brass life is going to suffer to where I'm probably only going to get 3 or 4 good loadings out of it. - The lower node will surely allow greater brass life. - Also, every barrel being unique along with different chamber free-bore lengths will have a good deal to do with what velocities are obtained.

I built a F open gun in .300PRC. I was really leaning towards Norma but keep looking at the PRC when we we're making test barrels for Hornady.

Attached is a partial picture of the rig.

Manners carbon fiber stock, Barnard PL action. 1-9 twist barrel.

Thanks KT, - One more question if I may, on the 230's, Were they the OTM's (tan box) or the Hybrids (yellow box) that you were shooting ?
I'm thinking about giving the 230's a try in my 32" barrel Hvy-Gun.

LOL! I knew Dave knew I was a lefty and was wondering if anyone else would pick it up in the pic.

225 Hornady's and 230SMK at 2900fps. and I'm not stepping on it. Good working every day load. I can run it up to 3000fps.

My barrel is currently at 32" but will most likely shorten it up to 30". Don't think the 32" is really giving me anything extra velocity wise.

In Feb. Dave here in the shop is taking my gun down to SWN as a back up. If he needs a gun to use he will have it along.
